Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Hubot-Assistant

Hubot Assistant uses Google's Assistant API to integrate an assistant into hubot. This can be used to add an AI assistant to a slack channel.

Prerequisites

You will need a hubot to use this function with. You can download existing hubots or create your own here: https://hubot.github.com/.

You will also need to obtain a Google API oAuth JSON to authenticate your assistant - this can be obtained here: https://console.cloud.google.com/apis. This JSON needs to be copied into the secrets.json and the path to this file must be stored in an environment variable named HUBOT_ASSISTANT_SECRET. You will also need to create an environment variable named HUBOT_ASSISTANT_TOKEN to store the path to the tokens.json file.

export HUBOT_ASSISTANT_SECRET="/some/path/secret.json"
export HUBOT_ASSISTANT_TOKEN="/some/path/token.js"
export HUBOT_DEFAULT_ADMIN="skbrown333"

The first time you run this it will open an authentication link and you will need to paste and enter the code into the console.

You will also need to add hubot-assistant to the external-scripts of your hubot.

Installing

npm install --save hubot-assistant

Warnings

Some commands will send the assistant into a loop such as:

google play mad libs

google tune my guitar

You can get out of this loop by saying:

google quit

(it could take a couple of tries).

In order to prevent this from happening you can blacklist certain words such as

blacklist add play

blacklist remove play

blacklist list

Only admins have access to the blacklist and admin list. First time use you will need to add a slack username to the environment variable HUBOT_DEFAULT_ADMIN.

admins add skbrown333

admins remove skbrown333
