Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Custom Data-Include

The custom data-include attribute allows you to include HTML content from external files directly into your HTML page using JavaScript. This approach is useful for including reusable components, such as headers and footers, without the need for server-side processing or JavaScript frameworks.

Usage

  1. Add any html element to your HTML file with the data-include attribute, specifying the path to the external HTML file you want to include:
<header data-include="header.partial.html"></header>
<div data-include="content.partial.html"></div>
<footer data-include="footer.partial.html"></footer>
  1. Add "html-data-include.js" to your project:

Option 1 - Use CDN, add this line before closing <body> tag in your html:

    <script src="https://unpkg.com/[email protected]/html-data-include.js"></script>

Option 2: - Copy "html-data-include.js" file to your project (ex. "js" folder) and add it before closing <body> tag in your html:

<script src="js/html-data-include.js"></script>
  1. The external HTML content will be fetched and inserted into the page, replacing the whole html element with the content of file from data-include attribute.

  2. Handling partialsLoaded event. As partials are loaded asynchronously, html-data-include emits custom event partialsLoaded when all partials were processed and inserted into DOM (or failed to load).

Example

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">

<head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
    <title>HTML Data Include Sample</title>
</head>

<body>
    <header data-include="header.partial.html"></header>

    <script src="./html-data.include.js"></script>
</body>

</html>

Contents of header.partial.html:

<header>
    <h1>This is header</h1>
</header>

How webpage will be presented in the browser:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">

<head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
    <title>HTML Data Include Sample</title>
</head>

<body>
    <header>
        <h1>This is header</h1>
    </header>

    <script src="./html-data.include.js"></script>
</body>

</html>

Handling partialsLoaded event:

document.addEventListener("partialsLoaded", () => {
  // code runs when all partials loaded

});

Limitations

The custom data-include attribute relies on the Fetch API to fetch the external HTML content. This means that it requires a web server to work, and it won't work if you're opening your HTML file directly in the browser (e.g., using the file:/// protocol). You need to serve the files through a local or remote web server.

This solution is also subject to the browser's same-origin policy, which means that the external HTML files must be served from the same domain and protocol as the main HTML file, unless CORS headers are properly configured on the server.
