Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

html-command-prompt

v1.0.5

Published

Display command prompt output using HTML5 instead of bitmap images

What

This NPM package allows you to show command prompt output using responsive HTML5 instead of bitmap images:

command prompt example

  • HTML5 markup provides better storage efficiency
  • HTML5 elements provide better rendering performance for browser layout engines
  • HTML5 components are easier to change in the future, compared to bitmap images
  • HTML5 responsive elements render sharper than scaled bitmap

A Vue implementation was chosen to allow easy incremental migration.

Install

npm i -P html-command-prompt

https://www.npmjs.com/package/html-command-prompt

Usage

Example usage inside a ES2015 Vue Single Component File:

<template>
    <TerminalWindow v-bind:title="title" v-bind:lines="lines" />
</template>

<script>
import TerminalWindow from 'html-command-prompt';

const output = `
Counting objects: 9, done.
Delta compression using up to 4 threads.
Compressing objects: 100% (9/9), done.
Writing objects: 100% (9/9), 903 bytes | 43.00 KiB/s, done.
Total 9 (delta 5), reused 0 (delta 0)
`;

export default {
    data: function() {
        return {
            title: "MINGW64:/c/dev/html5-command-prompt-webpack-sandbox",
            lines: output.split('\n')
        };
    },
    components: {
        TerminalWindow
    }
};
</script>

Options

  • title: a title for the command prompt
  • lines: array of strings, which will show as lines in the command prompt
  • styles: allows you to apply your own CSS to the component. Example usage is shown further below.

Usage (responsive example)

Just give the parent element "flex" & the component will handle itself.

<template>
    <div class="parent">
        <TerminalWindow ... />
    </div>
</template>

<script>
import TerminalWindow from 'html-command-prompt';

export default {
    data: function() {
        return {
            title: ...,
            lines: ...
        };
    },
    components: {
        TerminalWindow
    }
};
</script>

<style scoped>
.parent {
    display: flex;
    height: 150px;
    width: 50vw;
}
</style>

When theres not enough height to show all lines, the terminal will show a vertical scrollbar.

Usage (specifying extra styles)

<template>
    <TerminalWindow ... v-bind:styles="styles" />
</template>

<script>
import TerminalWindow from 'html-command-prompt';

export default {
    data: function() {
        return {
            title: ...,
            lines: ...,
            styles: {
                fontFamily: "'Roboto Mono', monospace";
            }
        };
    },
    components: {
        TerminalWindow
    }
};
</script>
