Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Team doesn't create changelogs? Hard to keep track of what you're deploying? Using a buildpack that doesn't run migrations or any post-deploy tasks?

This is a Heroku CLI plugin for listing what files are being deployed and whether any migrations or post-deploy tasks should be run.

Dependencies

  • git

This was built and tested with this release of the Heroku CLI:

$ heroku -v
heroku-cli/6.14.31-33a2d0a (darwin-x64) node-v8.5.0

Install

heroku plugins:install heroku-cli-what-amideploying

Run

Flags
  • -a - (REQUIRED) This is your Heroku app name passed the same as you would pass to other Heroku CLI commands.
  • -c - This is not yet implemented.
Commands
heroku what:amideploying -a your-heroku-app-name

<List of files will be here>

The command is also aliased so you can run either of the following:

heroku deploying -a your-heroku-app-name
heroku changed -a your-heroku-app-name

The command does a diff of the HEAD of the current branch and the commit hash of the last release of the given app.

It then outputs the changed files (the same as git diff --name-only hash1 hash2) and then checks to see if files have changed in either of the below detected folders.

If files have changed, it outputs a message with which type of task (migrations or after_party).

If migrations and post-deploy tasks are present the output of the command will look like this:

heroku what:amideploying -a your-heroku-app-name

<List of files will be here>

*** New migrations ***
*** New after_party tasks ***

Supported Detection

Migrations

**/*/db/migrate - This should cover Rails apps.

Post-deploy

**/*/tasks/deployment - This covers after_party.
