Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

handleable.js

A library for synchronous and asynchronous error handling.

This is a light weight open source package for use on server or in browser (using module bundler). The source code is available on GitHub where you can also find our issue tracker.

Related Projects

  • RawModel.js: Strongly-typed JavaScript object with support for validation and error handling.
  • Validatable.js: A library for synchronous and asynchronous validation.
  • Typeable.js: A library for checking and casting types.

Install

Run the command below to install the package.

$ npm install --save handleable

This package uses promises thus you need to use Promise polyfill when promises are not supported.

Example

import {Handler} from 'handleable';

let h = new Handler();

let e = await h.handle(
  new Error('unhandled error'), // error instance
  [ // list of handler recipes
    {
      handler: 'block', // handler name
      message: '%{foo} unhandled error', // optional handler error message
      block: async () => true // handler-specific property,
      foo: 'bar' // custom variable for the message
    },
    {
      handler: 'mongoUniqueness', // handler name
      message: 'already taken', // optional handler error message
      indexName: 'uniqueEmail' // handler-specific property
    }
  ]
); // -> a list of errors

See the ./tests folder for details.

API

Handler({failFast, handlers, context})

A core validation class.

| Option | Type | Required | Default | Description |--------|------|----------|---------|------------ | failFast | Boolean | No | false | When set to true, only the first error is handled otherwise all errors are returned. | handlers | Object | No | built-in handlers | Object with custom handlers (this variable is merged with built-in handlers thus you can override a handler if you need to). | context | Object | No | null | A custom context reference which is applied to each handler.

import {Handler} from 'handleable';

let v = new Handler({
  failFast: true,
  handlers: {
    fooError ({error}) { return error.message === 'foo error' }, // custom handler
  },
  context: null
});

Handler.prototype.handle(error, recipes): Promise(Object[])

Handles an error against the provided recipes.

| Option | Type | Required | Default | Description |--------|------|----------|---------|------------ | error | Any | Yes | - | Error to validate. | recipes | Array | No | [] | A configuration object describing handlers.

let error = new Error();
let recipe = {
  handler: 'block', // [required] handler name
  message: '%{foo} is unknown error', // [optional] handler error message (note that you can insert related recipe values by using the %{key} syntax)
  code: 422, // [optional] handler error code
  condition: () => true, // [optional] a condition which switches the validation on/off
  async block (error, recipe) { return true }, // [handler-specific] handler-specific property
  foo: 'bar' // [optional] a custom variable
};
let recipes = [recipe];
await h.handle(error, recipes);

Built-in Handlers

block

Checks if the provided block function succeeds.

| Option | Type | Required | Description |--------|------|----------|------------ | block | Function,Promise | Yes | Synchronous or asynchronous function (e.g. async () => true).

let recipe = {
  handler: 'block',
  message: 'is unknown error',
  async block (error, recipe) { return true }
};

mongoUniqueness

Checks if the error represents a MongoDB unique constraint error.

| Option | Type | Required | Default | Description |--------|------|----------|---------|------------ | indexName | String | Yes | - | MongoDB collection's unique index name.

let recipe = {
  handler: 'mongoUniqueness',
  message: 'is unknown error',
  indexName: 'uniqueEmail' // make sure that this index name exists in your MongoDB
};
