Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

gulp-cog

Build Status

Builds a list of includes in a similar way to snockets or sprockets but searches for available files from upstream pipes. This allows you to include js files from sources other than the disk, such as coffeescript or compiled templates. This plugin also leaves the concatination/inclusion to gulp-concat so gulp-sourcemaps works.

Installation

Install package with NPM and add it to your development dependencies:

npm install --save-dev gulp-cog

Usage

Add includes to the top of your files. Two directives are supported. require_tree which includes all files found in the directory specified and require which will include only the file specified.

//= require_tree treedir
//= require dir/file1

Then use gulp-cog in you gulpfile.

var cog = require('gulp-cog');
var concat = require('gulp-concat');
var foreach = require('gulp-foreach');

gulp.task('js', function() {
  // Include all files you want cog to know about in the pipeline
  gulp.src('app/**/*.js')
    // Select the files cog should look for includes in.
    // This will also filter the stream to match the glob provided
    .pipe(cog('app/*.js'))
    // Loop over the filtered files
    .pipe(foreach(function(stream, masterFile) {
      return stream
        // Emit the files in order matching includes cog found in masterFile
        // back into the stream.
        .pipe(cog.includes())
        // Concat all the files together.
        .pipe(concat(masterFile.relative))
    }))
    .pipe(gulp.dest('dist'));
});

Sourcemaps

Follow directions from gulp-sourcemaps. Here's an example:

var cog = require('gulp-cog');
var concat = require('gulp-concat');
var foreach = require('gulp-foreach');
var sourcemaps = require('gulp-sourcemaps');

gulp.task('js', function() {
  gulp.src('app/**/*.js')
    .pipe(sourcemaps.init())
    .pipe(cog('*.js'))
    .pipe(foreach(function(stream, masterFile) {
      return stream
        .pipe(cog.includes())
        .pipe(concat(masterFile.relative))
    }))
    .pipe(sourcemaps.write())
    .pipe(gulp.dest('dist'))
});

Limitations

Because this plugin uses gulp-concat to do the joining/including of the files. This plugin will not insert includes mid file. All includes will be concated before the file in which the include directive is found in. All includes must be places at the top of the file.
