Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Append row to Google Spreadsheet

Node.js module that makes it simple to append new rows to a spreadsheet.

  • Integrates with Google Spreadsheet API v3
  • Authorization is done by OAuth 2.0 and JSON Web Token (JWT).
  • Uses ES6 generator functions for simple flow control.

See more instruction here in this great blog post: Accessing Google Spreadsheets from Node.js.

Example

Installation

npm install google-spreadsheet-append

Create a Service Account and share spreadsheet

  1. Create a new project in Google Developers Console
  2. APIs > Enable Drive API & SDK
  3. Credentials > "Create new Client ID"
  4. Download private key and convet to PEM format: openssl pkcs12 -in downloaded-key-file.p12 -out your-key-file.pem -nodes
  5. Copy the email address in Credentials > "Service Account"
  6. Share a spreadsheet with service account email address
  7. Copy the file ID from the spreadsheet URL: "https://docs.google.com/a/gmail.com/spreadsheets/d/{fileId}/edit"

Example usage

var moment = require('moment');
var Spreadsheet = require('google-spreadsheets-append');
var spreadsheet = Spreadsheet({
	auth: {
		email: "[email protected]",
		keyFile: "privatekey.pem"
	},
	fileId: {fileId}
});

// append new row
yield spreadsheet.add({timestamp: moment().format("M/D/YYYY HH:mm:ss"), email: "[email protected]"});

Run tests

Set environment variables (see steps above):

export EMAIL=<service account email>
export KEYFILE=<key file>
export FILEID=<spreadsheet file id>

then run the tests:

npm test

If you want to enable debug output, then run the tests like this:

DEBUG=spreadsheet,google-oauth-jwt npm test

If you want to pass the private key in single-line string in the KEY variable, then first add newlines like this and copy the output.

awk 1 ORS='\\n' privatekey.pem
export EMAIL=<service account email>
export KEY=<key string with newlines>
export FILEID=<spreadsheet file id>
npm test
