Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Gaussian Background Generator (Version 0.5.1)

Note

This fork is aiming to publish the project to npm. So you can install with:

npm install gaussian-background-generator

Also benefit:

  1. ESM
  2. TypeScript

A script which creates a gaussian blur effect background using a canvas element. The effect is similar to that seen in various gaussian background images, however, this script generates the effect dynamically and includes a pleasant animation.

Script example (http://projects.foxx.io/gaussian/).

How it Works

The script works by cutting circles from multiple stacked canvas layers and then applying a blur effect to the result. This can be easily understood when the blur effect is removed (http://projects.foxx.io/gaussiannoblur/).

Requirements

If blur is enabled, the script relies on Mario Klingemanns StackBlur, FastBlur, IntegralBlur or StackBoxBlur plugin (http://www.quasimondo.com/StackBlurForCanvas/StackBlurDemo.html).

Usage

The script accepts a number of parameters:

var element = document.getElementById('element');

var background = GaussianBackground(element, layers, options);

Versions

There are 2 version of the script avalible for use. One is a debug version, designed to allow developers to easily debug and visualise their work. The other is a production version with all debug code removed. For improved performance be sure to use the production version on live websites.

Layers

The layers parameter requires an array/object of display layers using the following syntax:

var layers = [
    { orbs : 2, radius : 130, maxVelocity : 1, color : '#333333', columns : 0, rows : 0 },
    { color : '#000000' }
];

OR

var layers = {
    0 : { orbs : 2, radius : 130, maxVelocity : 1, color : '#333333', columns : 0, rows : 0 },
    1 : { color : '#000000' }
};

The parameters 'columns' and 'rows' can be used to split the layer orbs into columns and rows to encourage more consistent background generation.

Options

All avalible options are:

var options = {
    debug : false, // Only available in the debug version
    blur : true,
    blurRadius : 50,
    blurMethod : 'stackblur|fastblur|integralblur|stackboxblur',
    blurIterations : 1,
    animation : true,
    fpsCap : 20,
    renderWidth : 320,
    renderHeight : 130
};

Object Methods

The created object has a number of public methods:

var background = GaussianBackground(element, layers, options);

// Pauses the animation
background.pause();

// Play the animation
background.play();

// Recalculate the current layers
background.refreshLayers();

// Pass an array of new layers to be rendered
background.updateLayers(layers);

// Update the options of the object
background.updateOptions(options);

Notes:

  • Layers will be rendered with the first layer at the front and the last at the back.
  • Blur iterations are only compatible with the render methods 'fastblur', 'integralblur' and 'stackboxblur'.
  • It is better to use a lower render width/height due to performance. Because of the blurring the quality will appear almost identical once scaled up.

Browser Compatibility

The plugin has been tested and is working in all major web browsers, and supports IE9 and above. IE8 compatibility is made incredibly difficult due to StackBlur not supporting IE8 (If anyone could find a way around this that would be tremendous).

Future Development

  • Possibly add a some sort of performance scaling if FPS drops below the FPS cap
