Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Forrest CLI

Forrest helps you run Universal PWAs based on ExpressJS / Create React App.

Quick Start

We love GatsbyJS for building static websites and we took inspiration from that for the CLI interface:

# Create a brand new Universal PWA:
npx forrest run forrest-site -p 8080

You can optionally install Forrest as global package:

npm install -g forrest

run Options

The run command executes a Forrest project (and creates it if it doesn't exists).

npx forrest run [project_name, ...options]

The project_name is optional because you can use Forrest from within a project cwd omitting it's name, or from outside with a given name.

Development Mode

By default the project runs in production mode but you can also run the development mode using the -d flag:

npx forrest run -d

Custom Port

Forrest's starters use to run on 8080 and observe a PORT or REACT_APP_PORT environment variable to customize this setting. From the CLI you can use the -p flag:

npx forrest run -p 7777

or

npx forrest run --port=7777

Starters

Forrest comes with some starter projects. A "starter" is a boilerplate that implements some functionality that you might be interest into.

You can specify which starter you want to use with the -t option:

npx forrest new forrest-site -t johndoe/forrest-starter-xxx

This will simply try to clone from a GitHub repository "forrest-starter-xxx" hosted by the "johndoe" user.

Yes, you can easily create your custom starters and make them available as public GitHub repositories. Please fork this repo and list them here in the README.md, then run a Pull Request.

Running ForrestJS on Windows

We strongly suggest you take a look and download the Git Cmd for Windows.

ForrestJS works with that tool :-)
