Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

form-step

A module for grouping elements of a form and managing whether that group is displayed or not based on other observed FormSteps

This module assumes the use of BEM notation on class names and used npm package bem-mod to toggle --hidden modifiers on elements. It's up to you and the css you author to determine what it means for a form step to be hidden. For example, is the hidden form step 'display: none;', 'height: 0;', 'visibility: hidden;', etc. Each have their own use cases and support and imacts on accessibility, supported css transitions, etc.

Installation

npm i form-step;

Usage

import FormStep from 'form-step';

Instructions

  1. Create a new FormStep instance
const elmSection = document.querySelector('.contract');
const elmExpDateInput = elmSection.querySelector('.contract__date-input');
const elmSignatureInput = elmSection.querySelector('.contract__signature-input');

const contractDetailsFormStep = new FormStep(elmSection);
  1. Add elements to the FormStep instance
formStep.add(elmExpDateInput);
formStep.add(elmSignatureInput);
  1. Set Validations on the elements that collectively determine if the FormStep is valid or not:
// For example, if the expiration date is in the future, this "contract exp date" is valid
formStep.addValidationMethodToElement(elmExpDateInput, () => {
    return new Date(elmExpDateInput.value) > new Date(new Date().setDate(new Date().getDate() + 1));
});
// For example, if the signature input is not empty, this "contract signature" is valid
formStep.addValidationMethodToElement(elmSignatureInput, () => {
    return elmSignatureInput.value.trim() !== '';
});
  1. Add 1 or more FormSteps to observe:
const completionMessageFormStep = new FormStep(document.querySelector('.contract__completion-message'));
formStep.observe(contractDetailsFormStep);
  1. Through event handlers, programmatically, or other means, call notify()/notify-subscribers() on the FormStep to be observed. This will cause a re-evaluation of each FormStep's validity and update the BEM modifiers on each subscribed form step. For chains of more than 2 FormSteps, if any FormStep is invalid, and form step further down the chain will also be considered invalid.
contractDetailsFormStep.notifySubscribers();
