Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

focal.js

focal.js is a small library that helps users define focal points for images, ensuring your images look great no matter what crop size is used.

Focal.js #1

Preview set to 1920x720

Focal.js #2

Preview set to 375x720

Usage

Installation is done through npm.

$ npm install --save focal.js

Once installed, you can also create a standalone build with npm run build. This will use browserify to create a build and put it at dist/focal.js, this file can simply be included in your page after which the Focal variable will be globally available.

Basic usage

<img src="path/to/image.jpg">
var Focal = require('focal.js');

var img = document.querySelector('img');
var focal = new Focal(img);

Styles

In addition to this, you'll also want to include the focal.css file. This includes some fairly basic styles which are required.

Focal utilises BEM-style selectors to ensure low specificity, making it easy to adjust the styling to your needs. Despite this, including the base styles is recommended.

API

focal = new Focal(image[, options])

Create a new instance of Focal.

  • image - The image to replace
  • options - Possible options listed below

focal.setPreview(width, height)

Set the preview dimensions

  • width - Width of the preview, passing null will clear the preview
  • height - Height of the preview

Options

  • focus ({ x: 50, y: 50 }) - Position for the focus, both the x and y keys should have a percentage value between 0 and 100.

Events

Focal utilises node's EventEmitter so you can use .on to register for the events listed below:

dragstart

Fired when the the user presses down on the focus drag.

dragend

Fired when the user releases the focus drag.

change

Fired when the focus has been changed.

focal.on('change', function(x, y){
  // x and y are percentages, between 0 and 100
});
