Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

find-newer-docker-image

A command line tool to find newer versions of images on the Docker Hub.

Docker has tags, not really versions - unless they are used as such. For server maintenance purposes, it is useful to be able to retrieve tags for a given repository that are newer than the image tag I'm using right now.

Installing

Use npm to install:

> npm install -g find-newer-docker-image

You need a reasonably current version of node (I was on v8.11.3) to support ECMA Script syntax used by the code. Please create an issue if you'd like to be able to use older node versions and I'll see about babel-compiling the package.

Running

The command requires two parameters: a repository name that's accessible on Docker Hub, and the tag of the image you're using at the moment. It finds and lists all tags that are considered newer than yours.

> find-newer-docker-image wordpress 4.9.7-php7.0-apache
4.9.7-php7.1-apache
4.9.7-php7.2-apache
4.9.8-php7.0-apache
4.9.8-php7.1-apache
4.9.8-php7.2-apache

How It Works

The tool separates the tag into parts. For example, consider 4.9.7-php7.0-apache: the parts are 4.9.7, php, 7.0 and apache. Using the complete list of available tags on the repository wordpress (in the example above), those tags are then filtered out that match your own tag in all the text parts, have no lower versions in any of the number fields than the one you are already using, and have at least one higher number in a number field than yours. Magic, eh? :)
