Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

filth

Yet another common tools library. Suitable for browser use via browserify.

Installation

Works with Node.js, Browserify, or directly in the browser.

$ npm install filth

Usage

See the API Documentation for more information.

Create an Object that can safely be used as a hash table.

var filth = require ('filth');
var myMap = new filth.SafeMap();
console.log (myMap.__proto__); // undefined

Get simplified type strings for tricky items.

filth.typeof (document.createTextNode ('foo'));
fs.readFile (filename, function (err, buf) {
    console.log (filth.typeof (buf)); // buffer
});

Perform simple JSON manipulations. Note that clone will produce SafeMap instances instead of bare Objects.

var alfa = { foo:'nine' };
var beta = { bar:'ten' };
var fullDoc = filth.merge (
    filth.clone (alfa),
    beta
);
console.log (fullDoc.foo) // "nine"
console.log (fullDoc.bar) // "ten"
console.log (alfa.bar); // undefined
console.log (filth.compare (fullDoc, alfa)) // false
filth.merge (alfa, beta);
console.log (filth.compare (fullDoc, alfa)) // true

Inherit from parent classes. Mainly useful when building a browserify package as the standard util module is enormous.

function ParentClass(){}
function ModifyingClass(){}

// you can create a non-destructive child
var ChildClass = filth.createChild (
    ModifyingClass,
    ParentClass
);

// or just modify the child directly
filth.inherit (ModifyingClass, ParentClass);

If you're using filth in Node.js you might want to check out the LatencyLogger class. It logs the duration of a sequence of tasks as integer microseconds.

var timeLogger = new filth.LatencyLogger();

do_long_task ("task_01");
timeLogger.latency ("task_01");

do_long_task ("task_02");
timeLogger.latency ("task_02");

do_long_task ("task_03");
timeLogger.latency ("task_03");

var latencies = timeLogger.getFinalLatency();
for (var name in latencies)
    console.log (
        name
      + ': '
      + latencies[name]
      + ' microseconds'
    );

To limit access to a shared resource, consider the Lock primitive. It does not include timeouts so use responsibly.

var filth = require ('filth');
var async = require ('async');

// create a lock for four users
var taskLock = new filth.Lock (4);
async.each (tasks, function (task, callback) {
    taskLock.take (function(){
        run_long_task (task, function (err) {
            taskLock.free();
            callback (err);
        });
    });
}, function (err) {
    if (err) {
        // clear unstarted tasks
        taskLock.clear();
    }

    // all tasks complete
});
