Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

fail2ban client

API interface for contolling Fail2Ban programmatically

This module is designed to give access to the fail2ban interface used by fail2ban-client. The module talks directly to the socket that interacts with the server.

It is written in Coffeescript 2 using native Promises. You do not need Coffeescript to use the library; it is pre-compiled to Javascript ES6.

Where possible, I have use properties like fail.dbfile rather than functions such as fail.getDBFile() and fail.setDBFile().

All functions and properties return Promises. Do not forget to await the result. The result is always a valid Javascript object or a string.

Errors should be caught with try/catch if using await or by using a .catch() block if using .then().

Install

You will need python3 in your path. It is currently used to pickle and unpickle the messages to and from the server.

npm install fail2ban

Example

{ Fail2Ban, Jail } = require('fail2ban');

fail = new Fail2ban();
jail = new Jail('sshd');

(async function() { // Can't use await at the top level
  console.log(await fail.ping());
  console.log(await jail.status);
});

Methods and properties on the Fail2Ban class

Constructor

  fail = new Fail2Ban();
  fail = new Fail2Ban(path);
  fail = new Fail2Ban(socket);

The Fail2Ban class needs to know where to find the configuration file or, at least, where to find the socket. If no path is passed, it will look for /etc/fail2ban/fail2ban.conf. If a path to a socket is passed, it will use that.

Properties

await fail.status

Returns the number of jails and a list of them. For example:

{
  "jails": 1,
  "list": [
    "sshd",
    "smtp-proxy"
  ]
}
await fail.dbfile
fail.dbfile = "/var/lib/fail2ban/fail2ban.sqlite3"

Returns the database file name or sets it to a new value.

await fail.bans

Returns a fill list of bans currently on the database. Each entry in the returned array looks like this:

{
  "jail": "sshd",
  "ip": "219.129.237.218",
  "time": "2017-04-23T09:55:11.000Z",
  "matches":
     [ "Apr 23 11:45:15 vps sshd[26485]: Invalid user misyogixd from 219.129.237.218",
       "Apr 23 11:47:43 vps sshd[26497]: Invalid user couchdb from 219.129.237.218",
       "Apr 23 11:50:13 vps sshd[26511]: Invalid user cozy from 219.129.237.218",
       "Apr 23 11:52:41 vps sshd[26534]: Invalid user wow from 219.129.237.218",
       "Apr 23 11:55:11 vps sshd[26550]: Invalid user arkserver from 219.129.237.218"
     ],
  "failures": 5
}

Functions

await fail.ping();

Checks the server is alive. It returns "pong".

var response = await fail.message(<array of strings>);

This is the low level function that simply passes the message onto the socket. It returns a Promise that resolves to the response or will reject on error.

It is not intended that the consumer of this module call this method directly.

Methods and properties on the Jail class

Constructor

  jail = new Jail(<jail name>);
  jail = new Jail(<jail name>, config);

The jail name is mandatory. All methods and properties will work off this jail. The second (optional) parameter is the config file or socket as mentioned above.

Properties

await jail.status;

This shows the status for the single jail. Example below:

{
  "filter": {
    "currentlyFailed": 27,
    "totalFailed": 81,
    "fileList": [
      "/var/log/auth.log"
    ]
  },
  "actions": {
    "currentlyBanned": 2,
    "totalBanned": 2,
    "bannedIPList": [
      "200.46.254.107",
      "217.182.165.158"
    ]
  }
}
await jail.regex

This returns the list of regexes for this jail.

await jail.findTime;
jail.findTime = <num>;

This returns the "find time" in seconds.

await jail.retries;
jail.retries = <num>;

This shows and sets the maximum retries befor the IP address is banned.

await jail.useDNS;
jail.useDNS = "<mode>";

This shows and sets the useDNS flag to one of the following values: yes, warn, no, raw.

Methods

await jail.addRegex(<new regex>);

Add an new regex to the jail.

await jail.delRegex(<new regex>);

Remove an existing regex from the jail.

await jail.ban(<ip address>);

This adds an IP address to the ban list for this jail.

await jail.unban(<ip address>);

This removes an IP address to the ban list for this jail.

Bugs

  • This is a long way from finished. there are many more functions to be added.

  • This has been tested on fail2ban version v0.10.2. It may not work on earlier clients.

Helping out

If you have any time to add more functions to this module, feel free to submit a pull request.

In particular, if you understand how the Python pickle/unpicke works, it would be great not to have to rely on a python3 binary.

Issues

Please report any bugs or make any suggestions at the Github issues page.
