Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

ez-send

npm install ez-send

Send emails in Node with a single function.

A simple-to-use abstraction that sits on top of Nodemailer for simple use cases and quick prototyping.

Only works with username/password authentication and TLS-secured mail servers (PORT 465).

Emails are automatically formatted in a simple HTML template.

Basic Example

.env

HOST="smtp.example.com"
USER="[email protected]"
PASS="my_password_123"

index.js

import ezSend from 'ez-send';

const sendEmail = async (recipient, subject, body) => {
  const host = process.env.HOST;
  const user = process.env.USER;
  const pass = process.env.PASS;
  await ezSend(host, user, pass, recipient, subject, body);
};

const body = 'Thank you for signing up to our mailing list. You will now receive promotional emails and newsletters related to our product.'

sendEmail('[email protected]', 'Welcome!', body);

Modular Example with Express

.env

HOST="smtp.example.com"
USER="[email protected]"
PASS="my_password_123"

services/email.js

import ezSend from 'ez-send';

const host = process.env.HOST;
const user = process.env.USER;
const pass = process.env.PASS;

export default async (recipient, subject, body) => {
  await ezSend(host, user, pass, recipient, subject, body);
};

index.js

import express from 'express';
import { randomBytes } from 'crypto';
import sendEmail from './services/email';

const app = express();

app.post('/register-user', async (req, res) => {
  try {
    const { username, password, email } = req.body;
    // handle other non-email logic
    const body = 'Thank you for signing up to our service! Click on the link below to confirm your email address:';
    const verificationCode = randomBytes(4).toString('hex');
    const verificationLink = `${process.env.API_URL}/confirm-email/${username}/${verificationCode}`;
    await sendEmail(email, 'Thank you for signing up', body, [verificationLink, 'Verify your email']);
    res.sendStatus(201);
  } catch (err) {
    // handle error
  }
});
