Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

express-crash

Crash handling for express.

Why?

Handling 404 & 500 errors in any web app is certainly a must-do. While this is an easy, but mandatory and not so fun task, this module comes in handy.

I surely don't handle any error yet, how do I install it?

Easily:

npm install express-crash

OK, quickly, how does it work?

It helps to setup standard express error handlers. There are 2 important things to understand:

  • The module provides a NotFoundError enabling choosing between 404 and 500 errors. So whenever you want a 404, you can pass a NotFoundError to the next route handler.
  • The module uses a catch 'em all route in order to emit a 404 if no route did match.

How shall I set it up?

There are two ways of using it:

  • Set things separately, one by one.
  • Use the shortcut method handle() and give it your 404 and 500 handlers. It will do the rest.

In both case, make sure you carefully use trapRoute() after your actual routes as it will match anything in order to throw a not found error.

// mandatory step: require the module
var crash = require('express-crash');

var handle404 = function(err, req, res, next) {
	// do something fancy to entertain the users
};
var handle500 = function(err, req, res, next) {
	// do something even more fancy to thrill the users
};

// manual handler setup
// trapRoute() sets the catch 'em all route, so be sure it comes after your actual handlers
app.use(crash.handle404(handle404));
app.use(crash.handle500(handle500));
crash.trapRoute(app);

// quick 'n easy way to set handlers
crash.handle(app, handle404, handle500);

Dude, did you test anything?

Sure! Just install with dev deps:

npm install -d

Then run the tests:

make test
