Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

The Everything API

This is an API that is able to return almost any GET REST endpoint you want. Just provide the URL and the API will return the AI generated JSON for you inferring the content from the URL, it uses OpenAI completion API with GPT-3.5-Turbo by default to generate the JSON so it requires an OpenAI API key.

Once an endpoint is consumed, the data is stored in a cache that does not expire. This way, the API can return the same data without having to generate the original endpoint again.

Use it from NPM

$ OPENAI_API_KEY="..." npx everything-api

After launching the API, you can consume it at http://localhost:3000 and then access the URL you want to generate the JSON for at that server

$ curl http://localhost:3000/cities/colombia

Install it locally

$ pnpm install -g everything-api

Options available

  • port: The port where the API will be available. Default is 3000
  • model: The OpenAI model to use. Default is gpt-3.5-turbo
  • minimum: The minimum number of items to return. Default is 1
  • maximum: The maximum number of items to return. Default is 10
  • clean: The cache will be cleaned before starting the API

Development

This project uses pnpm for managing dependencies and running scripts. Here are some of the main scripts in the package.json:

  • pnpm start: Launch the API server
  • pnpm test: Run the tests
  • pnpm run dev: Run the API server in development mode with node --watch loading the OpenAI API key from a .env file
  • pnpm run lint: Lint the code
  • pnpm run lint-fix: Format the code
  • pnpm run generate-help: Build the help using as input the resources/help.md file
