Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Event Proxy

Build Status

Event proxying for node.js or the browser. Simple utility to route events to methods with the ability to preserve scope or pass additional arguments. Can be used with EventEmitter, jQuery, socket.io, or Backbone.Events.

Usage

Node.js

var proxy = require('event-proxy')

Browser

<script src="event-proxy.min.js"></script>

Methods

proxy(scope, map, emitter, …)

  • scope
  • map
  • emitter

Proxy all events from the emitter to their mapped functions with the applied scope. If the functions are strings, they must be present on the scope. Any additional arguments supplied to proxy are in turn sent to each method.

var emitter = new require('events').EventEmitter

function meow(hi, animal) {
  console.log(hi) // 'hi'
  console.log(animal) // 'cat'
}
function bark(hi, animal) {
  console.log(hi) // 'hi'
  console.log(animal) // 'dog'
}

var map = {
  meow: meow
, bark: bark
}
proxy(process, map, emitter, 'hi')

emitter.emit('bark', 'dog')
emitter.emit('meow', 'cat')

The map can also be an array of methods.

function one() {}
function two() {}

var map = {
  'hi': [one, two]
}
proxy(null, map, emitter)

emitter.emit('hi') // `one` and `two` both called

If an array is suppied, the values are assumed to be both event emitted and method names of the given scope.

var foo = {
  one: function() {}
, two: function() {}
}
proxy(foo, ['one', 'two'], emitter)

emitter.emit('one') // `one` called
emitter.emit('two') // `two` called

Additional arguments can be proxied as well, lets assume we have socket.io setup on the server. Normally the callbacks supplied to the socket have the socket as the this reference, but what if we want our instance as this?

var io require('socket.io').listen(80)

function Engine() {
  this.things = 'crazy'
}
Engine.prototype.drive = function(socket, data) {
  socket.emit(this.things + data)
}
var map = {
  drive: 'drive'
}
var engine = new Engine()

io.sockets.on('connection', function(socket) {
  proxy(engine, map, socket, socket)
})

This also works in the browser with jQuery elements.

<button id="btn">Proxy</button>
var $button = $('#btn')

function click(event) {
  console.log(this === $button) // true
}

function mouseover(event) {
  console.log(this === $button) // true
}

var map = {
  click: click
, mouseover: mouseover
}
proxy(null, map, $button)

proxy.config(listener)

Change the emitter listener method, default method is on

proxy.config('on')

Install

With npm

npm install event-proxy
