Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

eslint-config-byurhan

npm version license

Personal ESLint/Prettier config plugin for my projects with my preferred code style

What it does

  • Lints JavaScript based on the latest standards
  • Fixes issues and formatting errors with Prettier
  • Lints + Fixes React via eslint-config-airbnb
  • You can see all the rules here. You can always overwrite any of these settings or just fork the entire repo to create your own config.

Install

  1. If you do not already have package.json file, create one with npm init.

  2. Then we need to install the plugin:

npm install --save-dev eslint-config-byurhan
  1. Create a .eslintrc file in the root of your project folder. Your .eslintrc file should look like this:
{
  "extends": [
    "byurhan"
  ],
}
  1. Now you can add the scripts to your package.json to lint and fix:
"scripts" {
  "lint": "eslint .",
  "lint:fix": "eslint . --fix"
}
  1. Now you can run npm run lint to lint your code and npm run lint:fix to fix all fixable issues.

Settings/Rules

If you'd like to overwrite eslint or prettier settings, you can add the rules in your .eslintrc file. The ESLint rules go directly under "rules" while prettier options go under "prettier/prettier". Prettier rules overwrite anything in my config (trailing comma, and single quote), so you'll need to include those as well.

{
  "extends": [
    "byurhan"
  ],
  "rules": {
    "no-alert": 0,
    "prettier/prettier": [
      "error",
      {
        "jsxBracketSameLine": false,
        "trailingComma": "all",
        "singleQuote": true,
        "printWidth": 80,
        "semi": false
      }
    ]
  }
}

Auto Lint/Fix with VS Code

  1. Install the ESLint package for VS Code

  2. Now we need to setup some VS Code settings via Code/File → Preferences → Settings. It's easier to enter these settings from settings.json file, so click the {} icon in the top right corner:

{
  // Turn off "formatOnSave" for JS and JSX, we will set eslint to do this
  "[javascript]": {
    "editor.formatOnSave": false
  },
  "[javascriptreact]": {
    "editor.formatOnSave": false
  },
  // Tell the ESLint plugin to run on save
  "editor.codeActionsOnSave": {
    "source.fixAll": true
  },
  // Turn off prettier for JS and JSX because we are doing it through eslint already
  "prettier.disableLanguages": ["javascript", "javascriptreact"],
}
