Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Ember-dressy-table

Ember Observer Score Build Status Codacy Badge

Ember-dressy-table is an Ember.js addon that includes a powerful component for creating frontends with complicated tables—i.e., involving filtering/sorting/pagination/etc. It aims to balance functionality and extensibility by providing these capabilities/features:

  • a custom rendering component for table cells
  • dynamic/rearrangeable/toggable columns
  • the possibility to send actions from the cell component to upper components
  • valid HTML
  • easy i18n

You can use this addon out of the box. For the most common use cases, Ember-dressy-table requires only minimal development effort. However, it's open to extension for anyone seeking more sophisticated features.

Why Ember-dressy-table

We created this addon after discovering that DataTables, while popular and mature, made implementing the custom renderer and actions from the cell component rather difficult when working with sophsticated tables. We looked for a mature "native Ember.js" component and found that the most popular option, ember-light-table, did not provide valid markup.

Ember-contextual-table, which is similar to Ember-dressy-table (and which directly inspired it), nearly required a full rebuild before we could create dressy columns. We wanted something for Ember.js that was like Reactable, which enables fast, flexible, and simple data tables in React.

User Testimonial: Zalando

We are using this addon in production at Zalando, an online fashion platform with +21 million active customers (i.e., at scale!) and it's doing the job.

This project is early-stage and seeks contributors; please click here to review our TODO list. If you decide to use this project, please drop us a line via our Issues tracker to let us know how it helped you solve your technical challenges.

Core Technical Concepts

As noted by Robert Jackson in this 2014 article, "distribution of reusable Ember.js libraries has been a pain point for quite a while. During application development we have frequently wished for a silver bullet for the sharing of concepts/code from one project to another." Ember-dressy-table aims to address Jackson's point by offering a solution.

Ember-dressy-table leverages the open/closed principle, which reinforces that one should be able to extend the behavior of a given software entity without modifying its source code.
