Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

EmberJS Sockjs Addon

This addon aims to be a simple and easy way to integrate with any sockjs backend. It has been designed to be minimalistic, flexible, and lightweight instead of forcing certain conventions on the developer. This addon is compatible with EmberJS 2.0!

This README outlines the details of collaborating on this Ember addon.

Installation

To install as an Ember CLI addon (v0.2.3 or greater):

ember install ember-cli-sockjs

Simple example of using it in your app

import Ember from 'ember';

export default Ember.Controller.extend({

  /*
  * 1) First step you need to do is inject the websocket service into your object. You
  * can inject the service into component, controllers, object, mixins, routes, and views.
  */
  socketService: Ember.inject.service('sockjs'),

  init: function() {
    this._super.apply(this, arguments);

    /*
    * 2) The next step you need to do is to create your actual websocket. Calling socketFor
    * will retrieve a cached websocket if one exists or in this case it
    * will create a new one for us.
    */
    var socket = this.get('socketService').socketFor('http://localhost:8000/');

    /*
    * 3) The final step is to define your event handlers. All event handlers
    * are added via the `on` method and take 3 arguments: event name, callback
    * function, and the context in which to invoke the callback. All 3 arguments
    * are required.
    */
    socket.on('open', this.myOpenHandler, this);
    socket.on('message', this.myMessageHandler, this);
    socket.on('close', function(event) {
      // anonymous functions work as well
    }, this);
  },

  myOpenHandler: function(event) {
    console.log('On open event has been called: ' + event);
  },

  myMessageHandler: function(event) {
    console.log('Message: ' + event.data);
  },

  actions: {
    sendButtonPressed: function() {
      /*
      * If you need to retrieve your websocket from another function or method you can simply
      * get the cached version at no penalty
      */
      var socket = this.get('socketService').socketFor('http://localhost:7000/');
      socket.send('Hello Websocket World');
    }
  }
});
