Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

ember-cli-fast-table

Speed up table re-rendering by wrapping up array elements into objects to prevent Ember from tearing down and re-creating existing views.

The new Glimmer rendering engine on Ember 1.13 fixes this performance killer. If you are not on 1.13 yet, I strongly recommend you to upgrade, but if you are somewhat stuck on Ember 1.12, this addon can be your friend.

Installation

ember install ember-cli-fast-table

Usage

Let's say that you have the following template and computed property for a large table tableData that changes when someChangingAttr gets updated:

<table>
  {{#each row in tableData}}
  <tr>
    {{#each cell in row}}
    <td>{{cell}}</td>
    {{/each}}
  </tr>
  {{/each}}
</table>
import Ember from 'ember';

export default Ember.Component.extend({

  tableData: function(){
    var tableData = [],
        i = 0,
        num_rows = 10,
        new_row = [1,2,3,4,5];
    for (; i < num_rows; ++i) {
      tableData[i] = new_row;
    }
    return tableData;
  }.property('someChangingAttr')

});

You can rewrite your template and computed property with fast-table:

<table>
  {{#each row in tableData}}
  <tr>
    {{#each cell in row}}
    <td>{{cell.data}}</td>  {{! use cell.data instead }}
    {{/each}}
  </tr>
  {{/each}}
</table>
import Ember from 'ember';
import FastTable from 'ember-cli-fast-table/utils/fast-table';

export default Ember.Component.extend({

  init: function(){
    this._super();
    this._tableData = FastTable.create();
  },

  tableData: function(){
    var tableData = this.get('_tableData'),
        i = 0,
        num_rows = 10,
        new_row = [1,2,3,4,5];
    for (; i < num_rows; ++i) {
      tableData.replace(i, 1, [new_row]);
    }
    return tableData;
  }.property('someChangingAttr')

});

Under the Hood

fast-table and fast-array extend Ember.MutableArray and implement objectAt(idx) and replace(idx, amt, objects) with other KVO-compliant methods that Ember provides (this.set(), this.get(), etc). Thus you can use the interface that Ember.MutableArray defines on fast-table and fast-array, and all your observers, computed properties and templates get updated.

This addon is inspired by the disscussion on Ember forum. Many thanks to the Ember community!
