In step with the spread and volume of selfies shared publicly, the need to be able to understand complex visual communication has increased. We need skills that can make us more aware of what we are looking at as well as analytical perspectives that will enable us to interpret and reflect on our contemporary visual culture. This book shows what a selfie is, what it expresses and how it forms part of our everyday life. How digital technology affects our understanding of intimacy, gender and sexuality – and how this is expressed in the public sphere – is of central importance. In addition, the book presents a historical review covering the development from the painted self-portrait to the digital selfie. The photo artist Kristoffer Eliassen’s award-winning photo series is a particularly intriguing part of the book. The series received 3rd Place at the prestigious 2016 Sony World Photography Awards.
