Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

djo-shell

A series of shell scripts that I use in various things. Installable using NPM:

NPM

Usage

After installing using npm, you should be able to run the following commands:

browser-version <browser> <version>

Get pipe (|) separated details of the target browser version you are interested in for linux_x64:

browser-version chrome stable

# download the deb file for a version
wget `browser-version chrome stable | cut -d'|' -f4`

# or, just echo the version of chrome beta
browser-version chrome beta | cut -d'|' -f3

browser-list

Use parallel to retrieve some well known combinations of the browsers (in parallel):

browser-list

Which would generate output similar to the following:

firefox|stable|36.0.4|http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest/linux-x86_64/en-US/firefox-36.0.4.tar.bz2
chrome|beta|42.0.2311.60|https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-beta_current_amd64.deb
chrome|unstable|43.0.2334.0|https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-unstable_current_amd64.deb
chrome|stable|41.0.2272.101|https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
firefox|beta|37.0b7|http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest-beta/linux-x86_64/en-US/firefox-37.0b7.tar.bz2
firefox|unstable|39.0a1|http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-39.0a1.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

dirtygit

dirtygit

Iterate through the directories that are direct children of this directory and report if they are:

  1. A git repository
  2. Have either new or modified files
  3. Are out of sync with upstream

npmd-all-the-things

In preparation for potentially having no net access for a while, I'm using @dominictarr's npmd to bring modules I need (or potentially might use down locally). I'm sure the script can use some improvements, but it works well enough for me know.Basically, head into a parent directory somewhere where you have projects, and then run npmd-all-the-things. I've got a few different project containers (personal projects, rtc.io, forks, etc) which means running the script a few times but that's not too much of a hassle.

npm-all-the-things

Like npmd-all-the-things but just using npm with a really long cache-min time.
