Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Installation

Setup the Development Environment

npm install d3-renderer

Or

git clone [email protected]:seantis/d3-renderer.git
cd d3-renderer
npm install

Now you can run the service:

node .

Or the PhantomJS version:

./node_modules/.bin/phantomjs server.js

The node version is faster but does only support SVG generation at the moment and bounding boxes only to some extent.

Using the service

Simply POST your code to http://127.0.0.1:1337 and arguments and receive the SVG, PNG or PDF in return.

Client side code

The service expects code following a slightly modified version of Mike Bostocks reusable charts pattern. Define your code as follows.

var myNewChart = function(params) {
    var data = {};
    // add more parameters such as width, height, ...

    if (params) {
        if (params.data) data = params.data;
        // initalize the other parameter ...
    }

    var chart = function(container) {
        var svg = d3.select(container).append('svg')
            .attr('xmlns', "http://www.w3.org/2000/svg")
            .attr('version', '1.1');
        // more rendering ...
        return chart;
    };

    // optionally add chained getter/setters ...

    return chart;
};

The code can then be used locally as follows:

var chart = barChart({option: value})(el);

or as follows:

var chart = barChart(el);
d3.select(..).call(chart);

POST request

Send the script together with the parameters as JSON to http://127.0.0.1:1337/d3/svg, http://127.0.0.1:1337/d3/pdf (PhantomJS only) or http://127.0.0.1:1337/d3/pdf (PhantomJS only). Add the scripts in order you want to run them (the latest d3js version is already set up, no need to include it).

{
    "scripts": [
        "/* content of d3 plugins (optionally) */",
        "/* your code */",
    ],
    "main": "myNewChart",
    "params": {
        "data": {}
    }
}

Note that the PNG and PDF is returned Base64 encoded due to a nasty bug (https://github.com/ariya/phantomjs/issues/13026).

The PNG and PDF might need to know the size of the viewport, you can specify them by adding a viewport_width and viewport_height to the params. Alternatively, you can implement a getter width and/or height in your chart.

Improvements

PDF for the node version

There are some solutions for PDF rendering of SVG images:
