there was a horrible problem at work. my girlfriend, who uses reader on a regular basis, had serious problems after installing the update to adobe reader 11.1.22 from december 14, 2020. she could not open any pdf file which was shared to her on my (pc running windows 10 pro 1903) nas (network attached storage - for low costs) in the internet. she installed the newest update back on december 14, 2020 and restarted her computer. some weeks later she tried to open my pdfs and found the following message in the event viewer:


this software package update affected one or more of the following product components: adobe reader interface components 11.1.21.0.0, which is installed on this computer. adobe acrobat reader xi 11.22.


and this update caused similar problems as with reader 11.1.22. she had no access to the files which had been marked as “read only”. she had to reboot the pc and go through the entire user control panel. she wasn't able to do the update again because in the event viewer the update was stopped.


in version 6.3, we have updated the source code to the latest version, which includes the fix for this issue. the fix is present in the apache commons compress svn version control system, and will be included in the future minor release.


i reckon this would be another great solution, since then we should get rid of all the pdf bugs in acrobat and (if adobe gets their game straight) also in reader. the only thing is that the license is one of the "highest value" on the market and they're going to charge us a lot for a single license. (for the moment there are no responses in uservoice) - but we're also not going to be publishing this for free in any case.. 84d34552a1
