Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

component-hub

Component Hub is an addon for component to help with remote repositories, it can do two things:

  1. Server: It is node server that translates git component respositories into github-style repository paths. It is like Contre in that regard except that it will dynamically pull down the git repositories for you and keep them updated.

A request comes in for /:user/:project/:version/component.json and the hub server will find the repository and clone it if it hasn't already, or update it if it has a copy. Then it just serves the files up to the Component installer.

The repositories are configured via a hub.json file that maps the component name to a git location. The git location can be anywhere.

  1. NPM: It is also an npm module and command, so that you can call hub install and it will fire up the server on demand and install the components, then shut the server down.

When running as a command, it will store the downloaded git repos by default in ~/.component-hub/repos. It will also look for a hub.json in the current working directory. Both of these can be set with environment variables to be wherever you want. Namely, HUB_REPOS_CACHE and HUB_REPOS_JSON.

Requirements

  • component version >= 0.11.1 which has support for remotes
  • You must specify your remotes in your component.json spec to use the hub which by default runs at http://localhost:3333.

Server Usage

$ node app.js

NPM Install

$ npm install -g component-hub

NPM Usage

Once this is in place, you can run hub install from the directory where you would usually run component install.

hub.json

hub.json is looked for in these places

  1. Using the HUB_REPOS_JSON environment variable.
  2. ~/.component-hub/hub.json 3a. The app directory of the hub server if running as a server. 3b. The directory of the project you are in if running as command.

Sample contents of the hub.json:

{
  "me/otherproject": "[email protected]:otherproject.git",
  "company/secretproject": "[email protected]:secretproject.git"
}
