Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

complimenter

A delightful npm package designed to boost your spirits! complimenter compliments you every time you commit to a Git repository.

Features

  • Boosts Morale: Receive an uplifting compliment with every commit.
  • Easy Integration: Seamlessly integrates with any Git repository.
  • Fully Customizable: Fork and customize compliments to match your preferences.

Installation

You can install complimenter globally on your machine using npm. This enables the compliments to be available across all your Git repositories.

npm install -g complimenter

Setup

To ensure complimenter functions correctly, you'll need to set up your Git environment to use a custom directory for Git hooks.

For Unix/Linux/macOS Users: Run the following command in your terminal:

mkdir -p ~/.git-templates/hooks
git config --global init.templateDir '~/.git-templates'

This creates a .git-templates/hooks directory in your home folder and configures Git to use it as the template directory.

For Windows Users (PowerShell):

Run the following command in PowerShell:

$TemplateHooksPath = Join-Path -Path $HOME -ChildPath ".git-templates\hooks"
if (-Not (Test-Path -Path $TemplateHooksPath)) {
    New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path $TemplateHooksPath
}
git config --global init.templateDir $TemplateHooksPath

Usage

After installation and setup, proceed with your Git operations as usual. complimenter works in the background, and you will see a compliment appear in your terminal after each commit you make.

There's no additional setup required in your project. Just keep committing, and complimenter will keep the compliments coming.

How It Works

complimenter uses a Git post-commit hook to execute a script that outputs a random compliment. This hook is triggered after every commit you make to a Git repository.

Customizing Compliments

Feel free to fork the project and customize the list of compliments. This allows you to personalize your experience or add context-specific encouragement for you and your team.
