Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Codeceptjs Visual Testing

codeceptjs-visual-testing is a plugin (helper) for CodeceptJS E2E tests that helps verify that your UI doesn't unexpectedly change.

It makes use of pixelmatch and pngjs in order to avoid the ridiculous dependencies for ImageMagick and applies some basic heuristics to help prevent false positives.

0-mismatch

Installation

  1. Run
npm install codeceptjs-visual-testing
  1. Add the following to your codeceptjs.conf.js file.
exports.config = {
  helpers: {
    VisualTesting: {
      require: 'codeceptjs-visual-testing',

      // This is where baseline screenshots will be stored alongside any
      // extra json data used by this helper.
      baseFolder: '../visual/',

      // If your test fails, an image will be generated in this directory
      // that highlights the differences between your app's current state
      // and the baseline image.
      diffFolder: '../output/visual/'
    }
  }
}

Usage

Example

Scenario('the dashboard page looks the same', async () => {
   I..amOnPage('/');

   await I.dontSeeVisualChanges('dashboard_basic', {
     // Optionally, substitute matched text in new screenshots using text from the baseline image (Default: []).
     preserveTexts: ['.date:last-of-type', '#random-string'],
     // Optionally, hide elements that can't be consistently reproduced (Default: []).
     hideElements: ['.some-randmom-popup'],
     // Optionally, allow for more variation in the screenshot without failing the test (Default: 1).
     allowedMismatchedPixelsPercent: 3
   })
})

Creating and Updating Baseline Images

  1. Run UPDATE_VISUALS=1 codeceptjs run
  2. Commit the files generated in your baseFolder

Disclaimer

Visual tests should generally be used sparingly and on pages unlikely to change. Altering the page style or layout will mean needing to update the corresponding visual tests. Similarly, unless you're using git lfs, the binary image files may eventually take up a lot of space in your Git repo history.

Testing

Run npm run test:docker to run this project's tests.

This project comes with a simple test app and is containerized with Docker for easier cross-platform development and automated CI tests.
