Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

chalk-webpack is a Chalk clone but specifically for the frontend. It's a plugin for webpack that allows your console.logs to appear colorful in the browser - resulting in an improved developer experience. If you are looking for your logs to standout in an abyss of logs, this package will help get you there!

Install

npm i chalk-webpack --save-dev
npm i npm-watch react-app-rewired --save-dev
npm install serve -g

Setup

Create a config-overrides.js file in the root directory, and add the following code to it:

const chalkWebpack = require("chalk-webpack");
module.exports = {
  webpack: function(config, env) {
        ...
        config.plugins.push(new chalkWebpack());
        ...
        return config;
  },
  ...
}

In package.json of your root directory, make the following changes:

  /* package.json */
...
"scripts": {
-   "start": "react-scripts start",
+   "start": "react-app-rewired start",
-   "build": "react-scripts build",
+   "build": "react-app-rewired build",
-   "test": "react-scripts test",
+   "test": "react-app-rewired test",
    "eject": "react-scripts eject",
+   "watch": "npm-watch"
},
"watch": {
    "build": "src/"
},
...

in a terminal window run:

npm run watch

in a separate terminal window, run:

serve -s build

visit localhost:5000

Usage

You can add as many strings as you want to your console.logs, but please make sure the custom color that you pass in is the last string in your log and that all your strings inside console.logs use double quotes "" or template literals.

For example,

Inside your App.js file or any .js file in src/ folder, add the following console.log() statements. There are three ways you can write your logs:

First Case. You can use any valid hex code:

console.log("hello from chalk-webpack", "#006666");

Second Case. You can add any html color name of your choice:

console.log("hello again from chalk-webpack", "teal");

Third case. You can omit colors from your logs. In this case, all logs will default to lightblue color in the browser

console.log("I am a log without a custom color");
