Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Basic Style Loader

A webpack loader that adds Adds CSS to the DOM by injecting a <style> tag

Why use this instead of the default webpack-contrib/style-loader?

The webpack-contrib style-loader handles a lot of use-cases with many complex and difficult to understand options. A good portion of the code is workarounds to support old browsers. Its behavior with regards to sourceMaps is difficult to understand and with sourceMap: true it causes a FOUC (flash of unstyled content) because it uses <link> tags instead of <style> tags.

This module sheds backward compatiblity with old browsers, and fixes problems with sourcemaps causing FOUCs by using inline sourcemaps inside the <style> tags. This module seeks to be as simple as possible and is very little code.

Install

npm install basic-style-loader --save-dev

Usage

You will need to combine basic-style-loader with Webpack's css-loader or another loader that works similarly. The CSS Loader is in charge of taking your css files and bundling them into your .js bundle file at compile time. The Style Loader is in charge of inserting code so that at runtime, those css strings are inserted into the DOM of the page.

component.js

import style from './file.css';

webpack.config.js

{
  module: {
    rules: [
      {
        test: /\.css$/,
        use: [{ loader: 'basic-style-loader' }, { loader: 'css-loader' }],
      },
    ];
  }
}

Options

| Name | Type | Default | Description | | ----------------- | ------------- | ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- | | insertionFn | {Function} | (styleTag) => document.head.appendChild(styleTag); | The function that does the actual insertion of <style> tags into the DOM. You can provide your own function (styleTag, styleObj) here if you want to insert the styleTag somewhere other than the document head, or if you want to add additional attributes to it before it is inserted into the DOM | | sourceMap | {Boolean} | false | Enable/Disable Sourcemaps Note: for sourcemaps to work, they must also be enabled in the previous loader (usually css-loader) |

Options are provided in the normal webpack fashion as an object in the loader object.

{
  module: {
    rules: [
      {
        test: /\.css$/,
        use: [{
          loader: 'basic-style-loader',
          options: {
            sourceMap: true,
            insertionFn: function (styleTag) {
              //An example insertionFn that appends to the body instead of the head
              document.body.appendChild(styleTag);
            }
          }
        }, {
          loader: 'css-loader'
          options: {
            sourceMap: true,
          }
        }],
      },
    ];
  }
}

Credit where it's due

This module was created largely by looking at the style-loader codebase and trying to understand and imagine what a simpler, stripped down version of it would be.
