Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

barnacles-logfile

barnacles-logfile writes IoT data to local logfiles in CSV (or equivalent) format for easy manipulation and analysis in spreadsheets.

Overview of barnacles-logfile

barnacles-logfile ingests a real-time stream of raddec and dynamb objects from barnacles which it writes to a local logfile specific to each type. It couples seamlessly with reelyActive's Pareto Anywhere open source IoT middleware.

barnacles-logfile is a lightweight Node.js package that can run on resource-constrained edge devices as well as on powerful cloud servers and anything in between.

Pareto Anywhere integration

A common application of barnacles-logfile is to write IoT data from pareto-anywhere to local logfiles. Simply follow our Create a Pareto Anywhere startup script tutorial using the script below:

#!/usr/bin/env node

const ParetoAnywhere = require('../lib/paretoanywhere.js');

// Edit the options to customise the logfiles
const BARNACLES_LOGFILE_OPTIONS = {};

// ----- Exit gracefully if the optional dependency is not found -----
let BarnaclesLogfile;
try {
  BarnaclesLogfile = require('barnacles-logfile');
}
catch(err) {
  console.log('This script requires barnacles-logfile.  Install with:');
  console.log('\r\n    "npm install barnacles-logfile"\r\n');
  return console.log('and then run this script again.');
}
// -------------------------------------------------------------------

let pa = new ParetoAnywhere();
pa.barnacles.addInterface(BarnaclesLogfile, BARNACLES_LOGFILE_OPTIONS);

Hello barnacles-logfile

The following code will log simulated raddec data to a file named raddec-YYMMDD-HHMMSS.csv where the date and time represent the local time the log was created. The simulated data is provided by barnowl which is typically run in conjunction with barnacles. Install the barnowl, barnacles and barnacles-logfile packages using npm before running the code.

const Barnowl = require('barnowl');
const Barnacles = require('barnacles');
const BarnaclesLogfile = require('barnacles-logfile');

let barnowl = new Barnowl();
barnowl.addListener(Barnowl, {}, Barnowl.TestListener, {});

let barnacles = new Barnacles({ barnowl: barnowl });
barnacles.addInterface(BarnaclesLogfile, { /* See options below */ });

Options

barnacles-logfile supports the following options:

| Property | Default | Description | |:------------|:---------------------------|:---------------------------------| | eventsToLog | { raddec: {}, dynamb: {} } | See default event-specific properties below |

For example, the complete (default) options would be specified as:

{
  eventsToLog: {
    raddec: {
      folderPath: "./",
      logfileExtension: ".csv",
      logfileDelimiter: ",",
      minutesToRotation: 60,
      numberOfReceiversToLog: 1
    },
    dynamb: {
      folderPath: "./",
      logfileExtension: ".csv",
      logfileDelimiter: ",",
      minutesToRotation: 60,
      propertiesToLog: [ /* acceleration, ..., uptime */ ]
    }
  }
}

| Event-specific property | Default | Description | |:------------------------|:--------|:--------------------------------------| | folderPath | "./" | Path to folder where logfiles written | | logfileExtension | ".csv" | File extension to use | | logfileDelimiter | "," | Field delimiter | | minutesToRotation | 60 | Period between logfile rotations |
