Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

babel-plugin-lit-property-types-from-ts

Ever get tired of having to write the type of a lit property twice, once in the property decorator, and again in TypeScript? This plugin automatically determines the right value for a property's type based on the field's type annotation. If a default value is set, and the type annotation is omitted (thanks TS for automatic type inferences!), then the type will be set based on a typeof check against the default value.

Lit-element will use its built in String converter if type is omitted, so we'll only add type if your property is not a string (reducing bundle size!). We'll also omit the type when attribute: false is set, since the type is only used when converting between attribute and property.

If you don't think the inferred type would be correct, you can manually supply the type and this plugin will leave it alone.

If the type can't be inferred, say because your field has the type annotation any, string | number, or 'red' | 'green' | false | 42, then we'll throw an exception unless you've manually specified the type.

Usage

Install as a dev dependency:

npm install -D babel-plugin-lit-property-types-from-ts

Add it to your babel config file as a plugin - you'll also need @babel/preset-typescript (or @babel/plugin-syntax-typescript if you don't intend to use babel to transpile typescript), @babel/plugin-proposal-class-properties, and @babel/plugin-proposal-decorators:

// .babelrc.js or babel.config.js
module.exports = {
  plugins: [
    ['@babel/plugin-proposal-decorators', { decoratorsBeforeExport: true }],
    '@babel/plugin-proposal-class-properties',
    'babel-plugin-lit-property-types-from-ts',
  ],

  presets: ['@babel/preset-typescript'],
};

Examples

Infer type from type annotation

// In
@property()
field: boolean;

// Out
@property({ type: Boolean })
field: boolean;

Leave explicitly set type alone

// In
@property({ type: String })
field: boolean;

// Out
@property({ type: String })
field: boolean;

Infer type from default value

// In
@property()
field = false;

// Out
@property({ type: Boolean })
field = false;

Infer type as Array

// In
@property()
field: MyType[];

// Out
@property({ type: Array })
field: MyType[];

Omit type when attribute: false

// In
@property({ attribute: false })
field: SomeType;

// Out
@property({ attribute: false })
field: SomeType;
