Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Features

Browsing Astro Content Collections entry files can sometimes be a bit cumbersome, especially when you have a lot of them spread across multiple collections. Same goes for collection schemas which are written in TypeScript using Zod and can be hard to read for non-developers.

The Astro Content Devtools are available through an Astro component using SolidJS that you can add to your project and that will provide you with a UI to browse your content collections, schemas and entry files in your browser.

  • 🎈 Floating UI togglable with a button in the corner of the screen to show and hide the devtools.
  • 💾 Current state stored in localStorage to remember the toggle state, selected collection and entry file across reloads and navigation.
  • 📄 Preview the content of a collection entry, including the frontmatter and the body.
  • 🗜️ Filterable list of collection entry files.
  • 📏 Responsive and resizable UI.

[!WARNING]
The Astro Content Devtools are not compatible with Astro data content collections.

[!WARNING]
Now that Astro 4.0 has a built-in Dev Toolbar, this package should be refactored to a Dev Toolbar App.

Installation

Install the Astro Content Devtools package and its peer dependencies using your favorite package manager, e.g. with pnpm:

pnpm add -D astro-content-devtools @astrojs/solid-js solid-js

Update your Astro configuration to apply the SolidJS integration:

  import { defineConfig } from 'astro/config'
+ import solid from '@astrojs/solid-js'

  export default defineConfig({
    // …
+   integrations: [solid()],
  })

Temporarily load the Astro Content Devtools component, e.g. in a layout to make it available on all pages, and pass it the collections object from your content collections configuration:

  ---
+ import { AstroContentDevtools } from 'astro-content-devtools'
+ import { collections } from '../content/config'

  // …
  ---

  <!DOCTYPE html>
  <html lang="en">
    <head>
      <!-- … -->
    </head>
    <body>
      <slot />
+     <AstroContentDevtools collections={collections} />
    </body>
  </html>
