Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Introduction

The library "angular-type-safe-form" is a convenience library which extends the FormBuilder from Angular and enables you to use type-safety within reactive forms.

The library does not manipulate any existing function or property. It defines new functions (mostly postfixed - safe e.g. getSafe()). Those function perform the same action but return a type safe interface.

Want to see the library in a small demo: https://github.com/Schmitda/type-safe-demo

Installation

To install this library use npm with the following command:

npm i angular-type-safe-form --save

Getting started

Import the ReactiveFormsModule to be able to use FormBuilder. Also provide the TSFormBuilder within a Module (e.g. CoreModule).

@NgModule({
  declarations: [],
  imports: [
    CommonModule,
    ReactiveFormsModule,
  ],
  providers: [
    TSFormBuilder
  ]
})
export class CoreModule { }

Import the Core module within your app.module.ts

Inject the TSFormBuilder with DI in the Constructor.

@Component({
  selector: 'app-root',
  templateUrl: './app.component.html',
  styleUrls: ['./app.component.scss']
})
export class AppComponent {
  title = 'type-safe-demo';

  constructor(
    private tsFormBuilder: TSFormBuilder
  ) {
  }
}

Define a interface for your form:

interface AddressFormInterface {
  city: string;
  street: string;
  plz: string;
  country: 'CH' | 'DE' | 'AT';
}

export interface UserFormInterface {
  firstName: string;
  lastName: string;
  address: AddressFormInterface;
}

Define a property with the type safe implementation of FormGroup called FormGroupTyped. private userForm: FormGroupTyped<UserFormInterface>;

Create the new form in a type safe way this.tsFormBuilder.group<UserFormInterface>(...).

Use the magic:

Starting to build our form:

Building subforms:

Completed form:

Partial forms (see the missing first and lastname):

Functions on FormGroupTypes

this.userForm.value | returns UserFormInterface

getSafe() | get a formcontrol on a safe way this.userForm.getSafe(x => x.lastName).setValidators(Validators.required);

alt text

addControlSafe() | add a new control this.userForm.addControlSafe(x => x.lastName, new FormControl());

registerControlSafe() | this.userForm.registerControlSafe(x => x.firstName, new FormControl());

setControlSafe() | this.userForm.setControlSafe(x => x.firstName, new FormControl());

removeControlSafe() | removes a control type safely

Example - Accessing subforms

The following example accesses the user form and accesses the subform to patch the value of street.

this.userForm.getSafe(x => x.address.street).patchValue('Kuchenweg 12');
