over the course of two centuries, afghan society underwent profound changes. during this time, new political identities emerged, new cultural practices appeared, and major reforms were implemented. a major cause for change was the transition from a tribal society with a primary concern for clan solidarity to a highly stratified society. this new system inevitably affected the positions of women, who, as daughters, wives and daughters-in-law, were affected to a greater extent than men. at the same time, various factors intensified the patriarchal nature of the society.

one of the aims of this study was to investigate why india’s gdp growth rates were much higher in the 1990s than in the 1990s and early 2000s. this has resulted in many indians believing that the quality of indian manufacturing has declined and that western countries are now better suppliers for manufacturing goods than india. the argument is that the quality of equipment used by the indian manufacturers to manufacture is generally inferior to that used by the west. i use the kuznets curve (kuznets, 1955) and the productivity trap to investigate this issue. i show that the kuznets curve hypothesis applies to india while the productivity trap hypothesis does not. (neither the supply shocks or the policy shocks made the quality of indian manufacturing decline). i find that the indian manufacturing’s growth curve was superior to the west in the early 1990s. the quality of production increased in the 1990s and in the early 2000s, leading to the divergence in growth rates between india and the west. 84d34552a1
