Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

aframe-hemisphere-controls

a simple "orbit-controls" alternative for A-Frame

For a simple model viewer based on an A-Frame instance embedded in a web page I needed a mechanism to rotate the shown model by mouse, finger, arrow and WASD keys. Only model(!) rotation was needed, panning and zooming were unwanted. Additionally, stereoscopic display (aka "VR mode") and gyroscopes found in mobile devices had to be disabled.

And since the existing orbit-controls component did not meet my requirements, I just made my own.

Note: like many others, aframe-hemisphere-controls are based on the Three.js OrbitControls found in the Three.js examples folder. However, you do not have to import OrbitControls yourself, they come bundled into aframe-hemisphere-controls

NPM users: please consider the Github README for the latest description of this package (as updating the docs would otherwise always require a new NPM package version)

Just a small note: if you like this work and plan to use it, consider "starring" this repository (you will find the "Star" button on the top right of this page), so that I know which of my repositories to take most care of.

Installation

aframe-hemisphere-controls may be used as an ECMAScript module (ESM) or explicitly loaded after the <script> tag for A-Frame itself.

For the ESM variant, install the package into your build environment using NPM with the command

npm install aframe-hemisphere-controls

and import it into your code whereever needed

import "aframe-hemisphere-controls"

Otherwise, load the plain script file directly

<script src="https://unpkg.com/aframe-hemisphere-controls"></script>

Properties

aframe-hemisphere-controls is an A-Frame component with the following properties:

Usage

Once loaded or imported, aframe-hemisphere-controls may be used as a component of the scene element

<a-scene hemisphere-controls="position:0 1 4; target:0 0 0">
</a-scene>

By default, the shown model is assumed to be positioned in the center of the coordinate system with the camera placed one unit above and four units in front - if need be, you may change these settings as required.

vr-mode-ui and look-controls will automatically be disabled.

Operation

For the operation, imagine your model being placed inside a small "snow ball" - by rotating the snow ball the model is rotated as well and can be seen from different angles.

Rotation can be achieved by dragging with mouse or finger and by using arrow or "WASD" keys. The "Home" key resets the scene to the original camera position.

Example

Here is a complete example (albeit without the HTML boilerplate)

<script src="https://unpkg.com/aframe"></script>
<script src="https://unpkg.com/aframe-hemisphere-controls"></script>

<a-scene embedded
  hemisphere-controls="position:0 0.5 4; target:0 0 0"
  style="width:600px; height:450px"
>
  <a-sky color="#ECECEC"></a-sky>

  <a-plane width="4" height="4" color="#7BC8A4"
    position="0 0 0" rotation="-90 0 0"></a-plane>

  <a-box      color="#4CC3D9" position="-1 0.5 1"  rotation="0 45 0"></a-box>
  <a-sphere   color="#EF2D5E" position="0 1.25 -1" radius="1.25"></a-sphere>
  <a-cylinder color="#FFC65D" position="1 0.75 1"  radius="0.5" height="1.5"></a-cylinder>
</a-scene>
