Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

aframe-border-component

A component for creating borders in VR

Browser Usage

Live Example

Here are some live examples of the component. The simpler demo is ideal for mobile.

  • https://mitchallen.bitbucket.io/border/index.html - best viewed in Chrome
  • https://mitchallen.bitbucket.io/border/simple.html - simpler demo for mobile

Demo notes:

  • Works fine in Chrome on a Mac
  • Having issues with player falling through floor on iOS for complex demos (keep it simple on mobile)
  • On Windows 10 machine (Lenovo Yoga 710 laptop) can't seem to walk and turn at the same time

HTML Example

Run this example in a browser (you'll need to add your own image files or get them from my repo). Step off the birds-eye view platform and wander around.

Include Script

Include the latest script. Update the @version in the URL as needed:

<script src="https://unpkg.com/[email protected]/dist/aframe-border-component.min.js"></script>

Define Assets

Create an a-assets section and add the following:

  • an img to act as a material for the border
  • an entity, like a-box, a-cylinder or a-sphere, to act as a border

Be sure to give each entity unique id attributes. They will be needed to define the border.

The example below uses the static-body component from aframe-extras so the player can not go through the borders.

<a-assets>
  <img id="texture-wall" src="img/arrow-left.png">
  <a-box id="wall-one"
    static-body material="src: #texture-wall"
    depth="1" width="4" height="1"></a-box>
</a-assets>

You can also set the rotation for an asset. It will rotate relative to it's position and rotation along the border.

Create an Entity with a Border Component

A border component can consist of the following:

  • sides - the number of sides to create for the border (sides: 6;)
  • radius - the distance from the parent entity to create each border wall (radius: 10;)
  • wall - the id of the entity asset that will be used to create walls of the border (wall: #wall-one;)
  • open - a zero-based list of border walls that can be opened (not drawn) to allow entering and exiting (open: 0 2;)

Example border with no open walls:

<a-entity id="b4"
  border='sides: 4; radius: 5; wall: #wall-one;'
  position='0 0.5 0'></a-entity>

A border with open walls:

<a-entity id="b1"
  border='sides: 5; radius: 6; wall: #wall-one; open: 0 2;'
  position='0 0.5 0'></a-entity>

Adding / Removing Through JavaScript

An example of how to remove and add border attributes though JavaScript. The target element should be an a-entity.

<script>
    // how to remove / add a border attribute through JavaScript
    document.getElementById("b1").removeAttribute("border");
    document.getElementById("b1").setAttribute(
      "border","sides: 4; radius: 5; wall: #wall-one-blue; open: 0 2;");
</script>

NPM Installation

$ npm init
$ npm install aframe-border-component --save

Browserify Example

Below is an example of requiring the module within a file to be passed to browserify.

The modules named export, Component, should be passed to AFRAME.aframeCore.registerComponent:

// Browser distribution of the A-Frame component.
(function () {
  if (typeof AFRAME === 'undefined') {
    console.error('Component attempted to register before AFRAME was available.');
    return;
  }

  var border = require('aframe-border-component');

  // Register all components here.
  var components = {
    "border": border.Component
  };

  var primitives = {
  };

  Object.keys(components).forEach(function (name) {
    if (AFRAME.aframeCore) {
      AFRAME.aframeCore.registerComponent(name, components[name]);
    } else {
      AFRAME.registerComponent(name, components[name]);
    }
  });

  Object.keys(primitives).forEach(function (name) {
    if (AFRAME.aframeCore) {
      AFRAME.aframeCore.registerPrimitive(name, primitives[name]);
    } else {
      AFRAME.registerPrimitive(name, primitives[name]);
    }
  });

})();

Build with grunt

Use a grunt task to build the distribution file:

browserify: {
    dist: {
        options: {
            browserifyOptions: {
                // ...
            },
            transform: [['babelify', {presets: ['es2015']}]],
                plugin: [[ "browserify-derequire" ]]
            },
        files: {
           // substitute your component name for the distribution file
           "./dist/YOUR-COMPONENT.js": ["./browser.js"]
        }
    }
},

For more information, review the Gruntfile.js and package.json files in the root of this projects source code.

Testing

To test, go to the root folder and type (sans $):

$ npm test
