Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Components 📦

Exo UI components are 0 Markup workflow components that will help you create more composable user interfaces.

Goals of this library:

  • 0 Markup (this means it can be using with React Native)
  • Composable, you should be able to access data without the need to prop drill
  • Easily able to be copy/pasted, similar to how Tailwind code can be pasted into any project that uses Tailwind, Exo UI code should be able to be pasted into any project that has Exo UI as a dependency.

Components

Simple components have no dependencies other than React. Complex components have other dependencies specified.

Simple:

  • [x] SingleSelectList (Accordions, etc...)
  • [x] MultiSelectList (Filters, etc...)
  • [x] Pagination (Pagination, etc...)
  • [x] Carousel - Would include functions like next/previous as well as an optional rotation time
  • [x] Toggle (Modals, Dropdowns, etc...)
  • [x] Toast (Alerts, etc...)

Complex:

  • [ ] Finite State (Multi step form, product tour, etc...) - Requires @xstate/fsm (minimal implmentation with less features)
  • [ ] Matches (Text search, etc...) - Requires oramasearch/orama

Considering:

  • [ ] Text validation - Something like email validation is a good example, would likely require 3rd party dependencies, most likely Zod
  • [ ] Text masking - Something like date or financial formatting is a good example, would likely require 3rd party dependencies
  • [ ] Timer (promotions) - Is this a common enough workflow?
  • [ ] Range (slider) - The implementation for this is not obvious and it will be difficult to create nice ergonomics
  • [ ] Progress (stepper, loading, breadcrumbs, rating, etc...) - This would need to be really diverse in order to be useful
  • [ ] Calendar (date/time pickers) - The implementation for this is not obvious and it will be difficult to create nice ergonomics

Exo UI is not the same as Headless UI or Radix UI as it is not responsible for any markup and instead focuses solely on UI state.

Theorethically Radix UI and Exo UI should pair quite nicely and we would eventually like to create some documentation surrounding how to achieve this.

Limitations

Part of relying only on React means making use of Context this in itself is fine but it means developers do need to be aware of some of the limitations.

The most important thing to understand is the use of Provider components and that these must wrap all child components, including components that use any hooks that reference that context.

Exo UI does it's best to provide explicit error messages that help to explain if a context issue has occured, that being said if you are unfamiliar with Context I recommend reading up on it.

Style Guide

Named functions we use the function syntax.

Anonymous function we use the arrow (=>) syntax.
