Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@solid-aria/meter

pnpm turborepo size version stage

Meters represent a quantity within a known range, or a fractional value.

  • createMeter - Provides the accessibility implementation for a meter component.

Installation

npm install @solid-aria/meter
# or
yarn add @solid-aria/meter
# or
pnpm add @solid-aria/meter

createMeter

Features

The <meter> HTML element can be used to build a meter, however it is very difficult to style cross browser. createMeter helps achieve accessible meters that can be styled as needed.

Meters are similar to progress bars, but represent a quantity as opposed to progress over time. See the createProgressBar primitive for more details about progress bars.

  • Exposed to assistive technology as a meter via ARIA, with fallback to progressbar where unsupported
  • Labeling support for accessibility
  • Internationalized number formatting as a percentage or value

How to use it

import { AriaMeterProps, createMeter } from "@solid-aria/meter";
import { Show } from "solid-js/web";

function Meter(props: AriaMeterProps) {
  const { meterProps, labelProps, percentage } = createMeter(props);

  // Calculate the width of the progress bar as a percentage
  const barWidth = `${Math.round(percentage() * 100)}%`;

  return (
    <div {...meterProps} style={{ width: "200px" }}>
      <div style={{ display: "flex", "justify-content": "space-between" }}>
        <Show when={props.label}>
          <span {...labelProps}>{props.label}</span>
          <span>{meterProps["aria-valuetext"]}</span>
        </Show>
      </div>
      <div style={{ height: "10px", background: "gray" }}>
        <div style={{ width: barWidth, height: "10px", background: "green" }} />
      </div>
    </div>
  );
}

function App() {
  return <Meter label="Storage space" value={250} maxValue={1000} />;
}

Internationalization

Value formatting

createMeter will handle localized formatting of the value label for accessibility automatically. This is returned in the aria-valuetext prop in meterProps. You can use this to create a visible label if needed and ensure that it is formatted correctly. The number formatting can also be controlled using the formatOptions prop.

RTL

In right-to-left languages, the meter should be mirrored. Ensure that your CSS accounts for this.

All notable changes are described in the CHANGELOG.md file.
