Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Searchable Select Web Component

A custom web component that transforms a standard <select> element into a searchable dropdown. It allows users to filter and search through options in real-time, improving usability, especially for large sets of options. The component is easy to integrate and customizable through CSS.

Live Demo

Features

  • Searchable Options: Filter options dynamically as the user types in the input field.
  • Customizable Design: Style the component using the provided CSS classes or your own.
  • Lightweight and Easy to Integrate: Just include the web component in your HTML and wrap it around a <select> element.

CSS and Component Import

To use the component, ensure you include the CSS from the dist folder, as the package only includes the Web Component JavaScript when imported into your project.

<link rel="stylesheet" href="path/to/dist/style.min.css">
<script type="module" src="path/to/index.min.js"></script>

Alternatively, you can import the package directly in your JavaScript/TypeScript files:

import '@salvadorsru/searchable-select';

Note: Importing the package via JavaScript does not include the CSS. You will need to manually include the CSS from the dist folder in your project.

Use example

Basic usage

You can statically define all the elements as follows:

<searchable-select>
    <input aria-label="Search countries" placeholder="Where are you from?">
    <select name="countries" id="countries">
        <option value="1">Argentina</option>
        <option value="2">Brazil</option>
        <option value="3">Canada</option>
        <option value="4">France</option>
        <option value="5">Germany</option>
        <option value="6">Japan</option>
    </select>
</searchable-select>

Dynamic input

If the input does not exist, it will be generated automatically. You can also modify the aria-label and the placeholder of the internal input directly from the custom element.

<searchable-select
    aria-label="Search countries"
    placeholder="Where are you from?"
>
    <select name="countries" id="countries">
        <option value="1">Argentina</option>
        <option value="2">Brazil</option>
        <option value="3">Canada</option>
        <option value="4">France</option>
        <option value="5">Germany</option>
        <option value="6">Japan</option>
    </select>
</searchable-select>

Important Considerations

The default styles hide the select element above the input to allow the display of native form validation errors. If you want to show the regular select element as a fallback in case JavaScript is disabled, make sure to add the following code to your page:

<noscript>
    <style type="text/css">
        :root {
            --searchable-select-input-display: none;
            --searchable-select-position: relative;
            --searchable-select-pointer-events: auto;
            --searchable-select-opacity: 1;
        }
    </style>
</noscript>

Custom Styles with CSS variables

--searchable-select-border-color: // #ccc
--searchable-select-position: // absolute
--searchable-select-pointer-events: // none
--searchable-select-opacity: // 0
--searchable-select-background-color: // #fff
--searchable-select-option-hover: // #f0f0f0
