Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Store

This is easy to use implementation of observer pattern. It can be used in frontend and backend applications.

It differs from other similar libraries because there is no need to use reducers or complex setup with actions. Also it's very light, doesn't have any dependencies and doesn't force any type of programing on you (object oriented, function oriented).

Basic example

const store = createStore("");

store.subscribe(message => console.log(message));

store.publish("Hello from publisher");

Usage with React

const counterStore = createStore(0);

const increment = () => counterStore.publish(s => ++s);
const decrement = () => counterStore.publish(s => --s);

const useCounterStore = () => {
  const [state, setState] = useState(counterStore.getState());
  const unsubscribe = store.subscribe(data => setState(data);

  useEffect(() => unsubscribe), []);

  return state;
}

const CountDisplay = () => {
  const count = useCounterStore();

  return (
    <p>{count}</p>
  );
}

const CountControls = () => (
  <>
    <button onClick={increment}>increment</button>
    <button onClick={decrement}>decrement</button>
  </>
);

const Counter = () => (
  <>
    <CountDisplay/>
    <CountControls/>
  </>
);

Options

1. cloneFunction

The Store is using inner function to clone values

To not use external libraries and be fast it uses JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(value)) on not primitive values

This is fine for json-like data but will fail on when there is one of not valid json values: BigInt, Set, WeakSet, Map, WeakMap, functions, Symbol cyclic values

To be able to use this values there inside store provide custom clone function or disable cloning by setting cloneFunction to null (not recommended - will allow to mutate inner store state)

Read more about JSON.stringify limitations here

import { cloneDeep } from "lodash";

const store = createStore({ a: 1n, s: new Set() }, { cloneFunction: cloneDeep });

2. isEqualFunction

On publish event the Store will check previous state for changes

If there wasn't any - store will block running subscribers callbacks

You can provide your custom isEqual function or set it to null to always run subscribers callbacks even is store remains unchanged

import { isEqual } from "lodash";

const store = createStore({ a: 1n, s: new Set() }, { isEqualFunction: isEqual });
