Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Eslint Config

Eslint configuration with Typescript and Prettier support by default. This settings is used across all JavaScript/Typescript projects at Platos Educational.

Using

1. Install the library and its dependencies

npm:

npm install --save-dev eslint @platosedu/eslint-config prettier

yarn:

yarn add dev @platosedu/eslint-config prettier

2. Set up the prettier configuration

2.1. Add file .prettierrc.json

{
  "trailingComma": "none",
  "semi": false,
  "singleQuote": true,
  "endOfLine": "auto"
}

2.2. If you use VSCode, add the file .vscode/settings.json

This settings is needed to automatize code formatting when a file is saved

{
  "editor.formatOnSave": false,
  "editor.codeActionsOnSave": {
    "source.fixAll.eslint": true,
    "source.fixAll.tslint": true,
    "source.fixAll.stylelint": true
  }
}

3. Setup config by enviroment

3.1. NodeJS

Add file .eslintrc.json
{
  "extends": [
    "@platosedu/eslint-config"
  ],
  "env": {
    "node": true
  }
}

3.2. Vanilla JS

Add file .eslintrc.json
{
  "extends": [
    "@platosedu/eslint-config"
  ],
  "env": {
    "browser": true
  }
}

3.3. React JS with create-react-app + import resolver

Install babel-plugin-module-resolver

npm:

npm install --save-dev babel-plugin-module-resolver

yarn:

yarn add dev babel-plugin-module-resolver
Add file .eslintrc.json
{
  "extends": ["@platosedu/eslint-config/react"],
  "env": {
    "browser": true
  },
  "settings": {
    "import/resolver": {
      "babel-module": {
        "root": ["./src/"]
      }
    }
  }
}

4. Editor config

Add file .editorconfig
root = true

[*]
indent_style = spaces
indent_size = 2
end_of_line = lf
charset = utf-8
trim_trailing_whitespace = true
insert_final_newline = true

5. Typescript support

This eslint settings was setted up to support typescript by default.

5.1.

In order to support typescript on your project, you will need your own typescript config with your preferences. See below an example.

tsconfig.json

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "allowJs": true,
    "alwaysStrict": true,
    "esModuleInterop": true,
    "forceConsistentCasingInFileNames": true,
    "isolatedModules": true,
    "jsx": "preserve",
    "lib": ["dom", "es2017"],
    "module": "esnext",
    "moduleResolution": "node",
    "noEmit": true,
    "noFallthroughCasesInSwitch": true,
    "noUnusedLocals": true,
    "noUnusedParameters": true,
    "resolveJsonModule": true,
    "skipLibCheck": true,
    "strict": true,
    "target": "esnext"
  },
  "exclude": ["node_modules"],
  "include": ["**/*.ts", "**/*.tsx"]
}

5.2. Typescript module resolver

To support a customized base path for imports you need to add the baseUrl option on your tsconfig.json file. See below:

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "allowJs": true,
    "alwaysStrict": true,
    "esModuleInterop": true,
    "forceConsistentCasingInFileNames": true,
    "isolatedModules": true,
    "jsx": "preserve",
    "lib": ["dom", "es2017"],
    "module": "esnext",
    "moduleResolution": "node",
    "noEmit": true,
    "noFallthroughCasesInSwitch": true,
    "noUnusedLocals": true,
    "noUnusedParameters": true,
    "resolveJsonModule": true,
    "skipLibCheck": true,
    "strict": true,
    "target": "esnext",
    "baseUrl": "./src"
  },
  "exclude": ["node_modules"],
  "include": ["**/*.ts", "**/*.tsx"]
}
