Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

cdk-static-website-from-asset

Experimental Notice

This package is brand new and highly experimental so breaking changes may be made without notice.

About

This package aims to provide a comfortable layer of abstraction for static website hosting with CDK, while providing as much configurability as possible. Ideally you specify your app's source code, the commands (if any) used to build it, optionally a Route53 domain, and the constructs of this package take care of building and deploying it. It provides two constructs:

AssetWithBuild

An extension of the Asset construct for conveniently building your app.

StaticWebsite

A construct that represents infrastructure for hosting an Asset as a static website. You can optionally:

  • Add a Route53 domain with the domains prop.
  • Add deploy-time information from your CDK with the addObject method.
  • Tweak the underlying lower level constructs and their props. For example, you could add your own non-Route53 domain by adding your own certificate to the distribution.

StaticWebsite deploys Asset changes very quickly since it uses ManagedObjectsBucket.

Limitations

  1. The total unzipped size of the Asset given to StaticWebsite must not exceed 5 gigabytes.
  2. Currently StaticWebsite's domains accepts a maximum of one domain.

Installation

npm install @paulbarmstrong/cdk-static-website-from-asset

Usage

Assuming we have:

  1. An existing delegated hosted zone for mydomain.com with ID XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
  2. A react app source package at ../path-to-my-react-app-package that's built by react-scripts (like any react app from create-react-app).

A CDK stack for hosting the app at mydomain.com looks like this:

import * as cdk from "aws-cdk-lib"
import * as route53 from "aws-cdk-lib/aws-route53"
import * as s3_assets from "aws-cdk-lib/aws-s3-assets"
import { AssetWithBuild, StaticWebsite } from "@paulbarmstrong/cdk-static-website-from-asset"
import { Construct } from "constructs"

export class MyStack extends cdk.Stack {
	constructor(scope: Construct, id: string, props?: cdk.StackProps) {
		super(scope, id, props)
		const hostedZone: route53.IHostedZone = route53.HostedZone.fromHostedZoneAttributes(this, "HostedZone", {
			hostedZoneId: "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX",
			zoneName: "mydomain.com"
		})
		const asset: s3_assets.Asset = new AssetWithBuild(this, "Asset", {
			path: "../path-to-my-react-app-package",
			build: (exec, outputDir) => {
				exec("npm install")
				exec("npx react-scripts build --color=always", {
					env: { BUILD_PATH: outputDir }
				})
			}
		})
		const website: StaticWebsite = new StaticWebsite(this, "Website", {
			asset: asset,
			domains: [{ domainName: "mydomain.com", hostedZone: hostedZone }]
		})
	}
}
