Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Hero

Hello 👋,

GitHub release

M2 has dropped support for IE11 💪

This is the somewhat incredible readme for a little mashup of normalize, sanitize and opinion.

A reset in it's purest form is a way to level the browser playing field, attempting to ensure that each browser displays all standardised elements the same. Although that sounds fairly trivial, in practice it is quite time consuming and requries you to check every element in a variety of situations to ensure you haven't added strange issues.

The idea of course is to simplify the life of web folk not infuriate them with oddities. This reset is based on normalize which offers us that level playing field, it has then been carefully expanded and altered for more modern front-end best practices. For example we use box-sizing: border-box; in most cases, we also set position: relative; and switch off background repeat. These are micro wins and come from numerous discussions around the web, especially the sanitize.css issues section.

These opinionated changes are loosely set at the top level and inherited by children of <html> and <body>. This makes them easy to override and change in one place.

The sheet itself does trend toward being more specific at the end, which at the very least pleases me personally. (See CSS Specificity)

To fork the project and make changes so that you can help shape reboot simply do the following.

Step 1:

Download the repo or open terminal, change to the directory where your projects are stored (cd) and run git clone https://github.com/neuekit/reboot.git.

Step 2:

This project uses npm and can be setup using either npm or yarn. Simply cd into the newly created directory and run $ npm install

Step 3:

After running one of the above commands the dependencies will install and it will start watching for changes to the scss file. To do this after install run either $ npm run watch

Commands

To build the project manually run either $ npm run build To watch for changes manually run either $ npm run watch

Future

M3 (version 3) will shift to use the super low specificity pseudo selector :where and drop support for any browsers that do not support it (classic Edge, Safari 13 etc.)

That's all! Feel free to scrutinise this repo and help improve it.
