Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

PAAS: Playwright As A Service

PAAS is an open-source npm package that provides an HTTP server, compatible with Playwright's connect method. It enables you to execute Playwright tests from a home IP address, solving the common problem of IP-based blocking in automated testing environments.

PAAS is designed with a custom authentication system, allowing clients to authenticate in a way that best suits their needs. It's built to be modular and adaptable, fitting into your testing workflow with ease.

Furthermore, PAAS aims to extend its capabilities to support a wider community of users. The future goal is to enable individuals to connect their home-based Playwright servers to the PAAS infrastructure, potentially earning a profit if their servers are used by others.

This project was born out of the needs faced during the development of Linkedin.js, an open-source npm package that automates LinkedIn.

Features

  • Custom Authentication System: PAAS allows clients to authenticate in a way that best suits their needs, enhancing security and flexibility.
  • Playwright Compatibility: PAAS is fully compatible with Playwright's connect method, making it possible to run tests from a home IP address.
  • Future-Proof: The future goal of PAAS is to allow individuals to connect their home-based Playwright servers to the PAAS infrastructure, creating a community of home-based server hosts.

Technologies Used

This project extensively uses the following technologies:

  • Playwright: Playwright is a Node.js library to automate the Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox browsers with a single API. In PAAS, we use Playwright's connect method to provide an interface for running tests from home IP addresses.
  • Express.js: Express.js is a minimal and flexible Node.js web application framework that provides a robust set of features for web and mobile applications. We use Express.js in PAAS to create our HTTP server.
  • TypeScript: TypeScript is an open-source language which builds on JavaScript, one of the world's most used tools, by adding static type definitions. TypeScript helps us write safer and more understandable code in PAAS.

Getting Started

Installing the library

npm install @makepad/paas

Once the library is installed you can follow the example-server code to implement your own server.

You can also find an example client code in example-client.ts file
