Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

default-browser-win

Get the default browser on Windows and launch URLs, optionally in private mode.

This project is part of #CreateWeekly, my attempt to create something new publicly every week in 2020.

Installation

npm install -g @josephuspaye/default-browser-win

Examples

Get the default browser

import { getDefaultBrowser } from '@josephuspaye/default-browser-win';

async function main() {
  try {
    const result = await getDefaultBrowser();
    console.log(JSON.stringify(result, null, '  '));
  } catch (err) {
    console.error('unable to get default browser: ' + err.message);
  }
}

main();
{
  "browser": {
    "name": "Microsoft Edge",
    "privateSwitch": "-inprivate"
  },
  "shellCommand": {
    "exeFullPath": "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft\\Edge\\Application\\msedge.exe",
    "exe": "msedge.exe",
    "args": "--single-argument %1"
  },
  "shellCommandString": "\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft\\Edge\\Application\\msedge.exe\" --single-argument %1"
}

Launch a URL in the default browser

import { launch } from '@josephuspaye/default-browser-win';

async function main() {
  try {
    const result = await launch('http://rationallyspeakingpodcast.org');
    console.log(JSON.stringify(result, null, '  '));
  } catch (err) {
    console.error('unable to launch URL in default browser: ' + err.message);
  }
}

main();

Launch a URL in the default browser in private/incognito mode

import { launch } from '@josephuspaye/default-browser-win';

async function main() {
  try {
    const result = await launch('http://rationallyspeakingpodcast.org', {
      private: true,
    });
    console.log(JSON.stringify(result, null, '  '));
  } catch (err) {
    console.error('unable to launch URL in default browser: ' + err.message);
  }
}

main();

NOTE: It's currently not possible to launch the original (pre-Chromium) Microsoft Edge in private mode. If it is the default browser, the URL will be launched in normal browsing mode. You can disable this behavior by returning false from the onUnableToOpenPrivately() callback option passed to launch().

API

interface KnownBrowser {
  name: string;
  privateSwitch: string;
}

interface ShellCommand {
  exe: string;
  exeFullPath: string;
  args: string;
}

interface LaunchOptions {
  /**
   * Launch the URL in private mode.
   */
  private?: boolean;

  /**
   * Handle what happens when the default browser is one that can't be open
   * in private mode. Return true to open anyway, or false to abort.
   */
  onUnableToOpenPrivately?: (
    browser: KnownBrowser,
    shellCommand: ShellCommand
  ) => Promise<boolean>;
}

/**
 * Get the user's default browser and the shell command to launch it.
 * @throws Throws if there's an error finding the default browser or if no default browser is found
 */
function getDefaultBrowser(): Promise<{
  browser: KnownBrowser;
  shellCommand: ShellCommand;
  shellCommandString: string;
}>;

/**
 * Launch the default browser with the given URL, optionally in private/incognito mode.
 * @throws Throws if there's an error finding the default browser or if no default browser is found
 */
function launch(url: string, options?: LaunchOptions): Promise<void>;
