Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

GBA.js for Node.js

This is the node version of GBA.js

Version 1.1-git — Copyright © 2012 – 2013 effrey Pfau

GBA.js is a Game Boy Advance emulator written from scratch to employ HTML5 technologies like Canvas and Web Audio. It uses no plugins, and is designed to run on cutting edge web browsers. It is hosted on GitHub and is made available under the 2-clause BSD license. The most recent version can be found at http://endrift.github.io/gbajs/.

Browser Compatibility

The current version of GBA.js is known to work in the following web browsers:

  • Safari 6.0 or newer
  • Chrome 22 or newer
  • Firefox 25 or newer (slow)

The following web browsers also work, but will have degraded feature sets:

  • Firefox 15 or newer (no sound, slow)
  • Opera 12.1x or newer (no sound, slow)
  • Internet Explorer 10 or newer (no sound, slow, pixelated display does not work)
  • Chrome 20, 21 (pixelated display does not work)

The following browsers will not work:

  • Safari 5.1.x or older (no File API for uploading games into JavaScript)
  • Firefox 14 or older (no DataView, used for memory)
  • Internet Explorer 9 or older

All other browsers are untested.

Game Compatibility

Please see the compatibility list on the GitHub wiki for a list of tested games. Note that GBA.js is tuned for commercial games, and is currently lacking good support for homebrew games.

Usage

var fs = require('fs');
var GameBoyAdvance = require('gbajs');

var gba = new GameBoyAdvance();

gba.logLevel = gba.LOG_ERROR;

var biosBuf = fs.readFileSync('./node_modules/gbajs/resources/bios.bin');
gba.setBios(biosBuf);
gba.setCanvasMemory();

gba.loadRomFromFile('/path/to/game.gba', function (err, result) {
  if (err) {
    console.error('loadRom failed:', err);
    process.exit(1);
  }
  gba.loadSavedataFromFile('/path/to/game.sav');
  gba.runStable();
});

var idx = 0;
setInterval(function () {
  var keypad = gba.keypad;
  keypad.press(keypad.A);

  setTimeout(function () {
    /* pngjs: https://github.com/lukeapage/pngjs */
    var png = gba.screenshot();
    png.pack().pipe(fs.createWriteStream('gba' + idx + '.png'));
  }, 200);
}, 2000);

Feature List

Currently, every part of the Game Boy Advance hardware, save for some lesser used features and the link cable are implemented.

The emulator also has these features:

  • Downloadable and uploadable savegames
  • Screenshots
  • Pausing the emulation
  • Support for gamepaks that contain a realtime clock (e.g. Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire)

Features that may be implemented in the future include:

  • Savestates
  • Remappable controls
  • Gamepad support
  • Link cable over Web Sockets
  • Cheat code support
  • Fullscreen support
  • Support for gamepaks that have other sensors (e.g. WarioWare Twisted!, Boktai)
