Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

ngx-ui-output-bus

Helper functions to merge Angular Component @Outputs into a bus to reduce template footprint.

Background

When creating components that get used in many places, (i.e. apps that use common features), having many @Inputs and @Outputs makes the container templates bloated and hard to read. On top of that, repeated revisions of the UI component might include changes or additions to @Inputs and @Outputs that need to be updated in every template (and underlying local state) where the component is used. Some of these can easily be missed by the compiler (e.g. if the UI component doesn't throw an error for missing @Inputs or unused @Outputs), meaning that all implementations have to be updated manually.

About

This library provides helper functions to create Output Events of different types that emit on a single bussed @Output. It has the extra benefits of optional logging, and optional error throw if an unexpected event type comes through the bus - helping you to develop and debug your bus.

Whilst this is a published library, my intention is not necessarily that you consume this in it's published form only. Please feel welcome to clone the Github repo and migrate the lib into your code (just leave me a Github star to make me happy), and then you can tweak the Output Event Bus interface object to suit your needs. It's simple enough to not require changes against future Angular versions.

Usage

Emitting Output Bus Events inside the child UI component:

  @Output() outBus: EventEmitter<AddBookFormSubmitEvent> = new EventEmitter();

  submit() {
    outBusEmit<AddBookFormSubmitEvent>(
      this.outBus,
      OutputEventNames.AddBookFormSubmit,
      this.formGroup.getValue()
    );
  }

Listening for Output Bus Events in the container template:

<app-add-book-form
  [data]="vm.addBookFormData"
  (outBus)="outHandler($event)"
></app-add-book-form>

Handling Output Bus Events in the container component class:

  outHandler(event: OutputEvents) {
    environment.production || this.outLog.logOutputEvent(event);

    outputEventHandler(event, {
      [OutputEventNames.AddBookFormSubmit]: this.upsertBook,
      [OutputEventNames.BookListSelectBook]: this.selectBook,
      [OutputEventNames.BookListClearSelectedBook]: this.clearSelectedBook,
      [OutputEventNames.ShowFormCheckboxChange]: this.toggleShowForm,
      [OutputEventNames.TabsSelectTab]: this.selectTab,
    });
  }

  // assign property to arrow function expression to bind this into outputEventHandler()
  private upsertBook = (book: BooksEntity) => {
    this.state.upsertBook(book);
  };
