Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Interactive JS Tester

Test the functions and objects you wrote in a real-time terminal shell, analogous to IPython.embed().

Example

Suppose this is the code you want to test:

function DogToBeTested (name) {
  this.name = name;
};

module.exports = {
  DogToBeTested, 
};

Simply add this to the end of the file:

if (require.main === module) {  // so the test doesn't run when your code is imported 
  const interactiveTester = require('./interactiveTester');
  interactiveTester({
    console,            // always provide `console`
    ...module.exports,  // the exported things to be tested
    dog: new DogToBeTested('Stanley'), // maybe a sample object too
  });
}

Then, running the file will give you an interacitve terminal interface just like Node.js, but with your functions and objects loaded.

> dog
DogToBeTested { name: 'Stanley' }
> `hello, ${dog.name}`
hello, Stanley
> 

Notice

  • Pressing Ctrl-C ONLY ONCE will quit the script. Be careful.
  • We do not support "hot reload" yet. After you modify your script, please run your script again to see the changes.

Discussion

Possible shorthand?

If not in strict mode, it is tempting to use a short hand

{
  ...(function(){return this;})(), 
}

as the context object. However, that doesn't work, because console and many other global variables are not in the unspreaded object.
Is there a way to make this work? If you know, please submit a request!
